Is this a joke/parody of the current housing market?

So at the risk of getting myself doxxed, I know the neighbors and have intel on the whole situation. The old man who lived there has been having some health issues for a while and was finally moved to hospice care a few days ago. His adult children aren’t in a position to care for the house so they want to sell it ASAP. The “tenant” in the basement is a housekeeper who has been taking care of the old man for a few years. She, her young daughter and their little dog live rent free and the old man doesn’t want them evicted. They’re not bad people or drug dealers or anything like that.
As of yesterday, the house already has three all cash offers (presumably from investors looking to tear down/rebuild). It’s expected to go under contract in the next couple of weeks.

OP here. I can’t believe so many places have picked up this story and that there are almost 100k views on Redfin now. I guess even notoriety is good if it drives traffic. That’s a sad situation and a bit of a moral dilemma. What if the kids had abandoned the old man and the housekeeper was the only one caring for him with the promise that she could stay? I think the kids should at least pay her something for taking care of their father and moving out.

Oh, I think this housekeeper is going to be paid quite well to move out. And perhaps that's the right thing in this situation.

I would give the "housekeeper" the benefit of the doubt IF THE HOUSE WAS ACTUALLY CLEAN.

Do you want a gold star for having a cleaner house than this person? Because that's sure what it seems like.

Can the owner (legally) shut the water off to essentially force the basement tenant out?

No, that’s not legal.

The water company will turn it off if you stop paying the bill.

I believe the poster was just pointing out that the claim that the squatter is the housekeeper and the state of the house (as evidenced by the pictures) are incongruous.

It actually doesn't seem like that. Did you look at the listing pics?

This realtor is a rockstar. The way the house went viral probably maxed out the return for this sale. $$$

The realtor didn’t make it go viral, OP did.

That's the same as saying the movie studio and team didn't make an award-winning film, the panelists for the award made it an award-winning film. If OP didn't post it, another OP would have. You don't create this type of situation without hoping it catches peoples' attention. There could have been other ways to handle it if they didn't want it going viral. It worked out well for the sellers.

Plot twist: A very generous benefactor buys the house and gifts it to the housekeeper. Win-win situation. Not likely, but would make for a good hallmark movie.

With that logic, the owner made it go viral.
