She's retiring.

Yes. VERY hard for external candidates to get positions as Principal or higher because the system is so complicated to learn and MCPS invests a lot in training people in their professional workforce who they’ve tagged as future leaders (we can debate how well it does and doesn’t work). I only know of one HS principal who recently got an appointment that was external, and even they worked in MCPS for a while - in fact, as an interim - until they left.

They have hired a few directors (supervisors of principals) from outside of MCPS recently, and one of them was just promoted to associate superintendent. The new chief of staff and assistant chief of communications are also from outside MCPS.

And I’ve noticed that. I’m speaking more from what I’ve seen long term rather than recently.

Just want to say that the school that got Desmond Mackall is lucky. Years ago he was at our school and I thought he was fantastic. Nice guy, good understanding of what makes kids tick, seemed to have respect of teachers.

He is a gem and they're so lucky to get him.

So happy Ms. Escobar is going to Neelsville MS! She has her work cut out to turn things around there but she is perfect for the job!

She seems tailor-made for a school of its needs because of her strong ESOL background. Many challenges there, but the new building is coming in a couple of years which should do wonders reputation wise. I also feel sad about Wootton’s leader leaving, especially since she was thrust in such a difficult position succeeding such an icon and personal mentor to her after his death. She really keep the ship stable.

Is Wootton principal retiring? See they have an AP principal opening at Wootton too.

She was promoted to Consulting Principal - she will mentor new principals and will be terrific at that. Loss for Wootton though for sure.

Wootton has had a principal intern this year. Will he be likely to get the permanent job, assuming he's interested?

It's unlikely. That means they're a brand new principal. They probably wouldnt start in high school. But the fact that she supervised an intern is no doubt part of why she got the job supervising new principals. It's something she has done and likes to do.

Lately they have appointed several HS principals that had not been principals elsewhere first. For example, the new-ish principals at Poolesville, Einstein, Rockville, and Northwest were promoted from AP or principal intern positions.

AP is different than principal intern. Who went straight from intern to HS principal?

Look to Vilma Najera to be announced to this position. Current intern at Quince Orchard HS under Beth Thomas, who is highly respected and even moved from a director role back to being a principal. Her word carries immeasurable weight, and I’m sure Thomas has pushed her.
