I'm curious what your 12 year old typically watches and what else you haven't let them watch recently? Honestly, I was far more traumatized by movies I watched about the holocaust, slavery, civil rights, etc. than any horror movie or obviously fake film with shoot em up violence. Even as an adult I struggle with the more real life vile violence associated with historic events than stories that are so obviously fake. Kids tend to be more affected by real-life stories and events. I would never let my kids watch shows about kids being abused or kidnapped--THAT is traumatizing. Ditto for stories that center around parents as they divorce, etc. |
Bump. Can anyone compare to the Marvel movies...say Avengers Endgame? |
If your kid is on TikTok or Roblox or rides the bus or plays on the playground or talks to other kids, then your kid has heard about the show, knows what it is about, and has very likely seen portions of it (or animated versions). |
+1 My kid told me about it from games on Roblox. I had only heard about it in passing, so we watched it together. |
I agree with you. Also, there are so many other options for entertainment. I watched the Red Light Green Light episode and stopped there. Even as an adult, the shooting scene made me think of school shootings, and I found the association very disturbing. |
Marvel violence is more cartoonish and far less graphic. Squid Game has tons of blood and a good amount of gore, including brains spilled out and organs being removed, with incessant brutal violence throughout. Think 400+ people dead by the end of the series, with most of the deaths shown very graphically. Even though I think it's an excellent and thought-provoking show, there is no way I'm letting any pre-teen watch this. |
Thanks - very helpful. |
you people with your parenting non-violence preaching have ruined this discussion. why not create you own topic in the tween/teen forum. |
NP. Not to mention sweaty bathroom stall sex... haven't made it to the BJ scene yet... If you can't see the difference between how graphic this series is vs. marvel then you ARE the problem referred to above. It may be ok for a teenager to handle, but rationalizing this with some BS about your kid being the unicorn 10-11yo who is fine viewing mass murder, organ removal and bathroom stale sex/BJs... just stop. I sincerely hope these are troll posts meant to egg on debate. |
Meh.. Not sure what more needed to be covered that hasn't been shared... subtitles blow, check. great chance for exposure to Korean pop culture... riveting to watch, check...this show seems to be all about the psychology of violence, and human nature... so I'm not surprised that questions/comments about age appropriateness are being discussed. |
Your list is kinda limited. That's why I left this topic for reddit. So much to discuss. |
PP here. I don't actually mind the (relatively brief) sex scenes. Very easy to fast forward through those. But no way to filter out the violence. It's too constant and too intrinsic to the story. And so, so brutal. Anyway, we don't disagree. Either way, not for preteens! |

Back to a discussion of the show. What’d ya’ll think of the ending? |
Meh. I guessed that he was somehow involved in it since he was such a know it all. He acted more privileged than the status he pretended to have. And, I didn't really understand his motivation. I think the final scene sets the scene for a second season. Are we going to talk about how they made the VIPs out to be stupid Americans? |
