The Virginia General Assembly does not look like the face of Virginia.
The 4th district court does not look like the face of Virginia.
The FCPS school board does not…
Langley HS does not …

So why does TJ alone need to look like the face of Virginia?

You’re not making the point you think you are. The lack of representation in all those places and organizations you mentioned is also a direct result of systemic racism and perpetuates the cycle. TJ alone doesn’t need to change; the entire freaking society needs to change.

What exactly are you saying is systemically racist? How does society need to change? Racial quotas? Living wage? Two parents in the home? School vouchers? What? What is the system you are referring to that somehow Asians aren't afflicted by?

+1

I have to say as a white person I'm so happy there are Asians to point out the absurdity of some of this racial stuff. There aren't enough black students at TJ because there aren't enough of them in the county able and interested in doing that work. Increase the number of kids able and willing to do the work by 7th grade and then whether they are at Mount Vernon or TJ or Langley or wherever they will grow up to be scientists. In other words spend more time on schooling in elementary for black students and less money at TJ.

NP. This is what it boils down to. I have not read the whole thread, but for everyone furious that black students are not well represented, please also be furious that elementary curriculums are NOT teaching black students, or any student, well enough to take advance courses. Any students who takes advanced courses must have tutors, classes, academic camps on the side. Or, happen to have parents who have the time, money to help advance their child’s knowledge base.

When young children don’t have enough knowledge they are at complete disadvantage their entire lives . I’m furious schools embrace soft “progressive” curriculums instead of knowledge rich curriculums that build a strong foundation in vocabulary, history, literature, sciences. It hurts all kids but especially Black children.

Chasing admissions at TJ is missing the problem.

Totally! Focusing on TJ is useless. Those blacks and Hispanics that get into TJ will be successful with or without TJ. Why not focus on the majority of blacks and Hispanics who are struggling. FCPS should add mentors and tutors for math and reading in title 1 schools. Not sure how much equity we will achieve from TJ changes. We will achieve more equity if we get all students passing the math and reading sol. FCPS should use their CRT money and pay for after school STEAM programs in title one schools. Give black and Hispanic kids the STEM opportunities they are missing.

The thing is, TJ has outlived its purpose. It’s time to change it to an academy that any FCPS high school student can access if they meet the prerequisites.

This is not true. Black students are proportionately represented in AAP. They are in fact getting advanced classes, but they’re still not getting into TJ. The test was always the problem.

But in FCPS the focus is on blacks and Hispanics not Asians and whites. I would never send my kid to TJ but it’s great to have a school for the brightest. My kid at a average school is taking honors and AP and breezes through those classes. The gifted, brightest and highly motivated kids would be bored at a regular HS, it’s not challenging enough for them. If parents want to stress their kids out by sending them to TJ, let them. Not all bright kids should be in TJ, kids in TJ needs mentors, parental support, good work ethic and motivation. My kid is smart but doesn’t have the work ethic to be successful at TJ. Do we just want to remove TJ because it’s too many Asians and whites? That seems to be the issue. I don’t care if people are fighting to get into TJ, the stress and pressure is not worth it for my kid but they should keep it to serve the gifted and brightest of any color/race.

Removing TJ will make it worse. We will then have more overachievers in regular high schools that will widen the achievement gap. We will have more white and Asians in AP and honors. Should we also remove AP and honors now? Maybe we should just give everyone a gold medal for attending school and call it equal.

People game the system by taking expensive prep classes which give them access to the test in advance. This means you aren't finding the highest achievers at all just kids whose parents sent them to prep.

Totally! This favors wealthy areas and is exactly why per-school quotas make sense.

But if there’s no test, there is nothing to prep for so no prep classes. Why we still need quotas?

Maybe because many of the kids were already prepping and had been for years?

Maybe because 300 years of oppression and discrimination isn’t overcome by dropping a test and some under-performing children have a huge amount of untapped intelligence?

What's the cutoff when this will not be used as an excuse? 350 years? 400 years? While I shudder thinking about the injustice perpetrated by slavery, using that narrative as an excuse for failure is just a yoke that keeps weighing one down. Teach your kids to approach the world with the mindset that they are AT LEAST as good as everyone else.

The 1.5% from each HS is actually a great compromise. My older DC went to TJ and the younger one did not get past the second test. He might have gotten in with the the 1.5% rule (his school barely sends anyone to TJ) but he does not have the right work ethic for TJ. Hopefully, parents will make the right choice based not just on aptitude but also on attitude and willingness to work hard.

For whatever reason, blacks have a lower IQ than whites and asians. Studies have shown that IQ can increase generationally with education. We need to make sure that blacks value education more. Education has to be the primary focus. Sadly, we are a long way from that. I would like to see a marshall type plan that from day 1 of school makes the child and parent realize that education of the child is the most important component of raising the child.

Interesting statistics about immigrant blacks in the US vs American born blacks. https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2015/04/09/chapter-1-statistical-portrait-of-the-u-s-black-immigrant-population/

I'm not sure where you are getting this from. Please provide a link. If you are referring to IQ, the test, which is not foolproof and is biased in favor of those with an education, then you may be correct. If you are referring to actual intelligence, you are wrong. Intelligence is equally distributed across all races. It's possible that the tails of the peak is slightly higher for a tested population but not in any significant way.

If your true intent is actually helping Black children, I'd refrain from repeating what you just said. Most people assume IQ is a true representation of raw intelligence when it is not and false statements like these are of zero help.

Please provide a link to your support as well for the proposition that intelligence is equally distributed across all races. That is a critical point.

So are you making an argument for quotas as TJ? Lowering the bar? Or what? Please explain.

And Asians aren't for whatever reason as big as other races and thus are handicapped in sports like football and basketball where size can be an advantage. How exactly do you level the playing field for everything across all races and genders?

Np. The way IQ is measured as far as raw intelligence as as far as norming is done is in a way that is based on iq scores being evenly distributed. If it is not then it no longer means what it’s supposed to mean.

They even the playing field by trying to join in the support of white supremacy. The white Supremacists often will accept them more so than any other race. They can claim POC and make a good boot lick/buffer class.
