I was shocked by this also. Nannydeb is usually one of the sane, rational, helpful voices on the forum. This seems so out of character.

Oh gosh, I was absolutely being sarcastic! I thought I'd tossed a eye roll icon up, but now I see that I didn't.

I was trying (and apparently failing) to make an obviously sarcastic comment riffing off the "blame all the fat people" line running through this thread.

Sorry!

Whew!!! Glad you saw the posts so you could respond!

PP, don't you know PCOS is just an excuse? And Insulin Resistance? It's a big old lie fat people tell to make themselves feel better!

Yes, nanny deb is being sarcastic but she's wrong. While I don't condone being mean to people who are obese, we need to be honest that this is not a healthy situation and you are not without control over the situation. Insulin resistance is caused by poor diet and exercise lifestyle choices. You should not just accept that you are fat because you have insulin resistance. In fact, IR is a serious sign that your inability to manage your diet, exercise and weight balance is seriously affecting your health.

It does take more effort to get back to a healthy weight once you are obese BUT its even more important that you adopt the lifestyle choices to do it. This requires work and effort not just dieting or choosing the type of exercises that are easiest or even that you most enjoy.

It is not healthy, but hey, those who aren't obese are at the same risks of developing similar diseases since a lot of them come from genetic inheritance. The discrimination against ONLY obese people is unjustifiable. If you read on the subject, on paper smoking is worse than obesity not only for the smoker, but also for second hand smokers and yet they don't suffer discrimination. Hell, they are even allowed to use their work breaks to smoke. Moreover, smoking costs more to health insurance than obesity, but nobody gives a crap since celebrities can smoke and still look sharp. And before I forget, smokers can control the situation, but hey they do not get crap from anybody and can perfectly find jobs without being scrutinized. Not to mention that smokers can lie about smoking on their resume, too bad for fat people who cannot lie about it eh? CDC.gov has all the information and statistics.

Insulin resistance is caused by poor diet and exercise lifestyle choices.

Have you read about the subject in depth? Have you ever read that skinny people can also get type 2 diabetes? Yeah. So if a slim person develops the disease, such person won't be discriminated because the myth is that only obese people can suffer from diabetes or high cholesterol. Again, obese people K-N-O-W the risks of their obesity, but the society only points fingers at them as though nobody else could suffer from certain conditions. The problem these days is that they suffer DISCRIMINATION based on their looks.

You should not just accept that you are fat because you have insulin resistance. In fact, IR is a serious sign that your inability to manage your diet, exercise and weight balance is seriously affecting your health.

Again, you need to read more on the subject. I posted here before, I am a very athletic person with good eating habits and average weight and I have type 2 diabetes. So, can you please now explain to me how it happened?

MB here. I do not hire overweight nannies. Both of my parents have severe eating problems and have had gastric bypass. It has taken me years of therapy to undo the unhealthy relationship I was modeled with food. I have worked really hard to be a healthy weight.

I have two little girls. Our nannies have all be fit and athletic. Healthy eating has been an interview question. Would never ever expose my kids to someone 50 hours a week that could not control her eating.

This is all fine and well, but when your kids grow up to be bullies to those who do carry extra weight what will you think then? Are you at least teaching them that while it's unhealthy, that it doesn't make a person any less for being overweight or obese...because that's what's really important!

Of course, just because PP wants a healthy/fit nanny who exercises good eating habits for her children doesn't mean they will grow up to despise every fat person.

FYI, most people judge overweight people even if it's silent judgements. Have you seen those videos on Youtube where overweight people put hidden cameras on them and walk around just to see the looks they get from others. Very telling.

I think the part where you said You'd never expose your children to an overweight person for that amount of time a week. What if your kids grow older and have overweight teacher? Will you whip them out of school?! I think model teaching is great but you can't shield your kids from everything and overweight individuals aren't be most dangerous your kids will find themselves around!

I have hired overweight nannies. I don't think 30 or even 50 lbs is a big deal or means she cannot keep up. However OP said the candidate was double her picture. That does sound extreme. If a "normal" person was 5 4" weighing 130-140, double that would be a minimum of 260lbs.

I evaluate candidates (big or small) for their physical ability to keep up with my kids. I ask about lifestyle, whether the candidate is an outdoorsy person vs indoor, etc. I would have difficulty believing a woman who was 2x the optimal weight would be able to keep up with my kids.

I don't think its discrimination per se... If I were hiring for a moving company, I wouldn't hire a woman 5' 4" weighing 90 lbs either.

I am terrified of being judged for my weight by a family. The last time I interviewed was 5 yrs ago, and in a few months I will start again. This thread makes me sad.

Well PP, you have a few month to get in shape! Don't be sad, get motivated! I lost 60# before my interviewing began, and it helped tremendously with my confidence. Of course they are not going to consider an obese nanny- and I don't blame them! Children need a good roll model.

Why is talking about nanny obesity, "trying to start a fight"?

For God's sakes, some of you have discussed DB's skid marks.
Why should nanny obesity be off-limits?

No nanny should EVER have to see her employer's skid marks or deal with the employer's dirty laundry. That's just disgusting.

Why did you dig up a 5 plus year old thread?

You are fat shaming and judging her on her weight. I hope people judge you by your hypocrisy.
