Why are some people so LOUD?

I, too, work in an open floor plan. Between the guy on speaker phone with his office door open who I hear on the other end of the building, the girl who screams out the music she's listening to on her headphones (and chews loudly when she gets too tired of singing), the 4 separate groups doing conference calls in the open space at once, the other girl who jumps into every conversation with her own LOUD input (e.g., two co-workers are talking about a project and she's all, across the room, "NO, LARLA, THAT'S NOT TRUE! THE STATUS REPORTS ARE DUE ON WEDNESDAY!") and the guy who doesn't know what an inside voice is, it's impossible to find your inner zen.


I would say something, and it is very unprofessional to use speakerphone for every single phone call. Speakerphone is for conference calls, end of story.


Dialing into a conference line doesn't require an intercom option. When an intercom is needed it should be in a closed/private environment where the privacy of the meeting can still be respected, as well as the importance of not disturbing others.

Post a list of office etiquette rules. just type it and paste it up there anonymously.
No one will know. It will be great. Give it a month.

I am so loud. I try, really I do, but people are always sushing me. Open floor plans are the worst.

I'm sure it annoys the hell out of some people. I sort of feel bad, but honestly I try and that's the best I can do.

We just moved to an open floor plan at work and I had 2 women complain about my "loudness"... I tell them to tell the survey.

Good news I am getting a promotion and an office in a few weeks and that will piss them off more than my "loudness".

My NY friends are louder.

The issue the other people have has less to do with the loudness (though it's certainly a problem if they're complaining) but it's your attitude of "the world revolves around me and screw everyone else" that's the problem. If they had gone straight to your boss or HR to complain you'd be mad that they didn't come to you first and deal with you like an adult, face to face. Well they did, and your attitude is why people going behind other people's backs to the boss or HR instead of trying to deal with issues head on.
