How long will the shutdown last?

I'm thinking about leaving town this coming week. What're the chances we get called back mid-week? I'm thinking it's low, but want to see what others think. Can I safely go visit family?

I don’t think Congress is back in session until Tuesday. So you’re definitely safe til then.

As of today, this is the longest shutdown in history. And it doesn’t seem like it will end next week.

The airports too. My friend came in last week on an international flight. There were people at immigration but not a soul at customs to check anyone’s bag.

The truth is, for most ordinary Americans and those outside the DMV, there is very little impact or sense of urgency. Of course there are federal workers in other places, like the TSA, et cetera, but most Americans have little daily interaction with those folks. Ending the shutdown has proven not to be a political necessity for either party, and the longer it drags on, the harder it will be for either party to concede defeat and end it. What a mess.

What are you talking about? This is trickle down. If someone can't make rent, that effects landlords.
Can't afford go dinners - local restaurants
Childcare providers, kids extra circularize activities...
Long term this is a disaster for our economy. Just more mess for the Democrats to clean up once Trump leaves.

If shutting down the government is a "disaster" it means only one thing: the government is TOO BIG. Shutting it down should not cause a catastrophe.

That's idiotic. Proponents of small government believe that the government should only perform essential functions that the free market can't provide/perform. If the shutdown is a disaster, it means that the government is doing just that - performing essential functions that the free market can't provide.

Not exactly. Surely the free market could provide nongovt services such as park clean up, no? Surely the government is not the only entity that could provide airport security, right? It’s just that government has chosen to operate in these areas. I would oppose privatizing anything that government is currently doing. But we need to be a bit more precise here.

Not sure how well private contractors would do with airport security during a shutdown. I know before W we had private contractors as airport security. I remember them being low paid foreign nationals.

Americans are blaming Trump and his perennial low 40s approval is going down below 40 sooner or later. This isn’t gonna help him add new voters for sure. He started with a 3 million vote deficit and in 2018 mid term PA,MI,WI,IA,AZ,GA,TX, NC etc has moved left. He has driven away women of all color, Hispanics, Asians, and of course blacks. This is not gonna end well for the conman in chief. He has lost support in every single state since he was selected by the Slavery era EC in 2016.

He won’t need any votes in 2020. He’ll declare the election was rigged and the GOP and corrupt electoral college will go along with him.

A journalist on Face the Nation this morning is reporting that Mark Meadows has said that even if the President declares a National Emergency that does not mean the President will reopen the government.....
He also wants to use asset forfeiture funds to pay for the wall

I mean he’s definitely lost some support around the margins, but we just had mid-term elections and those states aren’t moving Democratic enough to ensure he’s defeated in 2020. Best case scenario Dems win narrowly, same states as 2016 but adding 3 narrow victories in PA/WI/MI. I don’t think the other states are going to vote for a D for president any time soon although it’s definitely true that statewide, D’s are having more success in those states.
