Sign in Bethesda about opening up ice hockey in the style of a woke yard sign.

Anonymous
I was on River Road today and saw a median sign that was colorful words on a black background in the style of “In this house: Black Lives Matter, love is love, etc...” but it was about opening indoor rinks for hockey and said something like “In this house we believe: hockey indoors is safe, kids need to play, etc...”.

CHRIST.

It was so tone deaf: a very clear take on the rainbow yard sign about human rights, but for hockey!!!I don’t often drive that route and haven’t seen these signs before. Is this a prevalent thing? It was astonishingly icky and beyond offensive!

I saw that sign, possibly at the same house. I think it is funny. But then again I also enjoyed the signs saying (and I am paraphrasing) difficult issues should be addressed by dialogue not snappy slogans and things of that ilk.

Not at all offensive.

I love that everyone railing about how racist we are are all the white people.

Is this about this thread specifically? Because I don't see any way to know what a poster's race or ethnicity is.

You seem to have a limited amount of tolerance OP if that sign set you off. They are allowed to like ice hockey. I personally think it is violent and scary but I am willing to agree that they are allowed to like it. When you become a little less narrow-minded let us know and then we can all share conversations about things we agree with and things we don't. Right now you're not going to be able to hack it.

Let’s just say I have a feeling.

I think you misunderstand, or maybe I miscommunicated. They are absolutely allowed to like ice hockey. I may even agree with them! But using that image/sign/style that is so clearly tied to human rights and BLM is really just in poor taste, and it reflects badly on people who display it, and it diminishes their message in the end. There are so many ways to convey their message, and this way makes them look stupid and inconsiderate and at worst, it makes them look like they're disrespecting a movement by co-opting an icon. Like appropriation, in a sense. If someone is dug into conservatism or MAGA my point will go directly over their head, but *that* is my point.

It's a bit strange considering rinks have been open for ages and tons of hockey was/is being played all over the region.

You're entitled to your opinion. They are entitled to theirs.

Right? It's bizarre for so many reasons!

Wow, people can’t say they like hockey now?? Or they CAN say it but only in this format or that format?

Someone sounds absolutely crazy and it’s not the person who likes hockey.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. The BLM movement doesn't hold a trademark on the form of their signage just like the Catholic Church doesn't hold a trademark on the crucifix. The hockey people are in no way coopting an icon with their sign. They are not being disrespectful.

For what it is worth, I am a White mom mixed race family with Black, White and Hispanic kids. Believe me, in our family, all lives matter including Black lives.

+1. We are DEFINITELY NOT going to agree on this one!

It's not as badass the ones I used to see in Shaw where people would both have the woke "we welcome immigrants etc signs" and signs opposing a new apartment building with affordable units
