Tholen is a bad School Board member and even worse politician.
Her time in office has been spent trying to appease the people who voted against her and worked the hardest to recall her and to alienate those who once supported her. She has failed at the former and succeeded spectacularly at the latter. |
| I’m sure she has no idea what she is doing and will find herself back on soil and water, confused and broken hearted. |

Keeping McLean overcrowded while Langley had space 2 miles away was untenable.
Neither Vance, nor Elaine, nor MCA or GFCA was at fault. That capacity situation was created by Platenburg, Brabrand and the previous board. The current board needs to expand McLean regardless. |
They aren’t going to lift a finger to do that. They think trailers and a cheap modular are fine, and it affirmatively makes some of them like Corbett Sanders and Keys Gamarra happy that those are the subpar conditions at McLean. Tholen is responsible for her own total unwillingness to advocate for the school now. You’re going to have to elect someone very different from Tholen in 2023. Tholen is meek, an FCPS insider who has never once rocked the boat, and largely unconcerned with any schools other than those her own kids attended (TJ and Langley). |
|
If you look at the CIP they are expecting a growth in HS enrollment, offset by declines in MS and ES enrollment.
It wouldn’t be unreasonable to add capacity at overcrowded high schools now and if necessary defer some renovations of under-capacity elementary schools, but the likes of Elaine Tholen would never have the courage to suggest this or force her colleagues to go on record to oppose it. Even though last year they all lined up behind Karl Frisch when he proposed to amend the CIP by taking $35M set aside for a new ES in Fairfax/Oakton to use on an entirety different project in another pyramid. And that project wasn’t even really needed. I hate that these people are just so spectacularly bad at their jobs. |
| How is thread still up? These fake recall things are being primarily funded by out of state Republican donors. Wise up, people. We don't need secret Trump loyalists taking over our district. |
In Tholen's case, people have largely moved on from the recall petition, tossed out with the help of a local prosecutor to whom Tholen had donated money during his campaign, and are focusing on her defects as a sitting Board member. In Cohen's case, the recall petition was filed in court within the past two weeks, so the response to the recall petition is very much of current interest. People continue to work to obtain sufficient signatures to submit a recall petition for Omeish, but it's a larger challenge since she is an at-large member. You aren't paying much attention if you think those wanting to make sure these three and other School Board members serve only one term at most are "secret Trump loyalists." |
hahahaha - Please, I really hope you stay focused on the "Trump is everywhere" narrative. While you're doing that, we'll stay focused on getting schools to educate, not co-parent our kids; putting criminals in jail; getting po3n out of school libraries, and reopening our Country. And when you refer to 'out of state' republicans, let's remember that it was Steve Descano who passed the Tholen-recall issue to his buddy Jim to dismiss. Steve, as Im sure you know, is best buds with George Soros, or at least he wants to be given that George was the largest donor to Steve's campaign. Yes, an out of state social democrat and proud progressive was the largest donor to Steve via the "Justice and Public Safety PAC." $681,369 from Massachusetts straight into Steve's pocket. Does that make Steve a progressive social democrat? If so, what does that make Elaine? She made the largest donation to Steve's campaign from sitting board members, writing a check for $2,594, and it was worth every penny! Stella Pekarsky dug deep for $2,407 with Carl Frisch right behind her at $2,376. Colonel Sanders, I mean Corbett Sanders could only muster a meager $2,306 but that was more than Terry Mc-Awful who only gave $1000 - money he could have probably used in his own campaign. Favola only put forth and insultingly low amount of $500. But I digress - really your post gives me the opportunity to summarize the most important thing Elaine, gamara, rachna, abrar, Ned-Flanders I mean corbet sanders, George Soros and all the rest taught me - LOCAL ELECTIONS MATTER. That is why this thread is still open, and is why so many of us will stay active until this board of buffoons is voted out. |
+ a million |
I still agree with you that platenburg is at the center of this whole mess, but Vance carried the flag for platenberg's faulty numbers, elaine's faulty logic, and branband's faulty leadership. He became the "parents" in elaine's crap narrative when she noted that "many parents want a boundary change" Vance failed MHS. If you really want to stretch the story-line, the next biggest criminal is strauss - she ignored this whole issue for decades, threw a last minute PoS to elaine in the form of a boundary study, and then had a room named after her at MHS. What a failure strauss was and is. |
The recall has been run by parents with kids in fcps public schools. All volunteers. Like it or not, the recall petitions are truly grass roots, started by democratic moms who voted for Biden with their republican neighbor and friends, several of whom also voted for biden. |
The parents willing to sign their names to a public recall petition are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to people in that area who want to see Tholen’s time on the Board come to an end. |
Strauss tried to amend the CIP in 2018 (iirc) to make a boundary change and add apartments to Langley. The board put the kibosh on it because they were about to start the process of changing policy to allow them to nuke the boundaries and redraw the entire county. |
It’s been a shit-shoe for a long time. Won’t rehash all the missteps, of which there were many by several SBs controlled by Democrats who paid scant attention to Platenberg’s inept management of facilities. Just want to see as many of them as possible gone in 2023. |
Yes yes - and the SB began by booting brabrand. They told him to get lost - one wonders why? Maybe because he failed in epic fashion over the last two years. The irony is that the SB probably doesnt fully realize that many parents feel towards them the way they (the SB) feels about brabrand....it is time to boot them all, starting with Elaine. |
