This person was in 9th grade in name only. He wasn't in your kids's algebra or history class, because he didn't have the English proficiency. Probably 90% of his classes were ESL classes with other ESL kids of varying ages.

Yes, 18 year olds do come into contact with 14 years olds in high school, like between classes, and during other classes that are not grade-specific (German class, shop class, etc). Probably 20% of students at Rockville HS are currently 18 -- lots of 12th graders are easily 18 already.

I also don't mind if 18 year olds are IN CLASS with 14 year olds since there is a teacher there supervising at all time. That's probably the safest place to be.

What I am furious about is how students are walking the empty halls during class, and there is no monitoring and no one to hear the screams of an innocent victim. How did that happen?

Do you really think these rapists were well-behaved students or is there a strong possibility they were sexually harassing the 14 year old girls in their 9th grade ESL classes? Just because your kids aren't ESL doesn't mean 14 year old immigrant girls should have to put up with having 18 to 20 year olds in their class. There is a strong possibility that the 14 year victim might be an ESL immigrant from a non-Spanish speaking country since she didn't understand what the rapists were saying but they spoke to her in the hallway. So don't disregard the safety of the young immigrant teenage girls because "he wasn't in your kid's algebra or history class". These girls are someone's kid and deserve to be safe. If you have no chance of graduating by 21 then you shouldn't be in a regular high school. This would exclude all freshman ages 17 and above.

This. No reason to integrate 500+ students in the METS program in MCPS high schools- surprisingly the W schools don't get the burden of taking them in.

There are benifits to living where the bottom rung immigrants can't afford too

Everyone can leave the public schools and the system can shut down leaving one public open for total and complete nonsense. Why waste our children precious learning years and all our tax money on absolute unserious and dangerous "academic" systems.

You're 100% right.

Yeah right, how many vouchers would they hand out...two? And if it's the same thing in FCPS, those of us who can't afford private school have no hope but to leave D.C. area.

Unreal.

No, no it is not Superintendent. Keeping students who are LEGALLY here safe is the right thing to do.

+1. What will it take for them to wake up?

Vouchers will knock some sense into them.

You can feel an earthquake occurring. Helicopter parents are not going to stand for undocumented aliens 18 year old freshmen with no papers, vaccinations, transcripts , international criminal background checks , birth certificates sitting in class next to their 9th graders. They will change the system or completely leave it at all costs.

SEVEN HUNDRED enraged parents packed into Rockville High School this evening.

Sanctuary status is OUT the window.

Fantastic!! So glad to hear there was such a good turnout. I was unable to attend. Would love to hear from parents who did attend. My kid is zoned for Rockville HS.

I was at the meeting. The superintendent made a horrible impression. Kept taking about this "situation" or "single isolated event" should not be what we think of when we think of Mcps. He was totally dismissive of how devestating this is for this girl. She a statistic an outlier, something to be forgotten and eventually ignored to him. She was in their custody, they failed to protect her, she was harmed because of their negligence. I hope she sues the hell out of Mcps. The Superitendent is a callous jerk who I'm now certain tried to cover this up. He's gotta go. The whole thing is sickening.

Yup. I'm no helicopter parent but unless I'm assured that my kids are going to be safe from stupid mcps policies that prioritizes undocumented individuals over legal citizens, then no question, we are out.

Still - nothing should have happened to make news. I hope to goodness it's not rape, but I'm not too hopeful.

An arrest at a school for rape always makes news -- as it should.

That said, let's see how this case plays out. One possibility is this was consensual and the girl made up the story after regretting it later. Notice how the suspects did not flee the school after, but were arrested at school.

Now that we know there are cameras, I think your point is moot. But I also think it is disgusting. 9am consensual intercourse with two boys in a boys bathroom and you propose the possibility "that the girl made up the story after regretting it later?"

What kind of a mudpile did you crawl out of? Plenty of kids stay at their Ivy League schools and in fact at the scenes of the crimes after gang raping first year students. Should we assume that their continued presence is evidence of their innocence?

I take it you also agree with the Stanford swimmer's sentence - only 6 months in jail after raping a girl he did not know whom he found unconscious behind a dumpster. As his father wrote to the judge, appealing the severity of the sentence, six months is too much time for 20 minutes of misjudgment /enjoyment.

Do the world a favor, and don't pass on your antediluvian prejudices to your progeny - your boys will develop the same sense of entitlement, and your girls will never until hell freezes over admit that they were sexually assaulted - at a time, no matter what the age, when from painful experience I know that what they most need is their fathers and brothers and boyfriends/husbands standing beside them, believing them, and supporting them.
