This was on Weibo or similar. NY Post did a very short story you can Google. |
I was just casually jumping in and out of this thread but otherwise not paying attention to this issue. Then I heard the reports on npr this morning about the assessments done in Hong Kong. Now considering getting those masks. |
Wouldn't that make it more on par with the flu? Lots of cases, a small percentage deadly? |
No, because the number of deaths is also underreported. |
Why do people keep doing this?? There are 5 CONFIRMED cases in the US right now. Sure many others are being invested -- probably at GMU and VT, but also at a high school in Philadelphia and probably many other places etc. But investigated does not mean that it necessarily is the virus. There was testing done at Duke last week and also in Hackensack NJ -- everyone screamed OMG cases in NC and NJ, my sister knows a nurse at Duke who has a friend on that ward how said it definitely is it etc. etc. And both turned out NOT to be that virus. |
VA Health Dept says two of the three patients they tested for coronavirus have come back negative. |
Pro tip: never pass along as “information” anything someone tells you they saw on Twitter. |
That is good news. The two patients from Central VA are negative. They are still waiting for results from the unconfirmed case in Northern VA per this araticle https://wset.com/news/local/two-patients-under-investigation-test-negative-for-coronavirus-in-central-region-of-va |
30,000 - 40,000 deaths per year in the USA from influenza is a normal flu season.
Just for a bit of perspective. |
Out of how many total cases? I think that's the issue here - we don't know this virus well enough yet to know the actual mortality rate, how it works, etc. |
Please keep that post in mind in the coming days and weeks. Then we will see if the Wuhan virus is "just a cold" or closer to the Spanish Flu of 1918. |
+1 |
How would a nurse possibly know this? All these people have been tested, entered into a database, and compiled? Across all Hubei? Wuhan? If you've ever been to a public hospital in China, that's not technically possible. |
But that wasn’t uniformly fatal - it struck down all age groups but disproportionately killed healthy young adults (relative to the usual victims). |
That PP at least came back and corrected herself. That’s better than most of us do. |
