Wuhan virus (coronavirus) arrives in the USA

I ordered 20 pack of N95 masks for $85.00 at Amazon, also ordered 6 in kid size, I think I am being incredibly paranoid and stupid but fortunately I can afford to be stupid.

They come in handy for cleaning, gardening, etc. Not wasted.

There are several videos on twitter of people in the high-rise apartment buildings yelling support out their windows to each other (ie: "keep going") as they're all hunkering down. Here's a couple

I bought a 20 pack at Home Depot for $21 yesterday (doing some drywall work). Ace Hardware and Lowes have cases of them too. Usually near the paint department.

Hong Kong University and Imperial College are doing statical modelling based on previous outbreaks. Both put the number in the 10s of thousands range. HKU say 40,000 likely infected now with 25,000 showing symptoms in Wuhan alone.

I’m a bit paranoid too. I bought the last box of masks on the shelf at Home Depot and some food emergency supplies.

My strategy is every time they confirm a new case in the states I’ll buy more food.

If it blows over I’ll donate it to a shelter. Win win.

Summary of today's CDC briefing:

- 110 'persons under investigation' in 26 states
- 5 confirmed positives in US
- 42 tested negative
- no new cases overnight
- CDC entire genome published
- Similar to China's genome published
?? Which means to date, it has not mutated
- As of yesterday, CDC recommends all people traveling to parts of China used 'enhanced precautions'
- Returning travelers with symptoms may be asked to take precautionary measures ?
- At this time, virus is not spreading in US!
- R0 value: between 1.5-3 which is WAY less than measles
- Incubation period is around 2-14 days
- Number of travelers from Wuhan to US decreasing
- considering broadening of screening
- Risk of packages from China with #nCoV2019: based on data from other coronaviruses with poor survivability on surfaces (hours), low risk of packages being shipped from China contaminated with #nCoV2019
- Risk of spread while asymptomatic:
@CDCgov has no clear evidence of spread prior to symptoms
- No human-to-human transmission in US to base data on

This is smart.

We don’t have the space for much extra food, but we are mindful that February and March have brought some paralyzing snow storms to this area before. So we’ve cleared a linen closet shelf and put in an extra week of non perishable food and more OTCs than we usually keep on hand. If we never need it for a virus quarantine, we might need it for a blizzard. If neither happens, we can donate.

Masks, gloves, and Purell make me feel better and I’ll consider that a mental health investment.

If the last two points are true it's a big relief. Chinese officials had previously said transmission was possible during the incubation period.

The second case in Ontario was a wife who got it from her husband. He had returned infected from Wuhan. She never left the country.

Little emergency kit is always good idea regardless of times. Even if you have a tinny place you
probably have some free space under the bed. They have those ten bucks or so flat containers that
fits easily under the bed. It could keep all the basic supplies giving you a little peace of mind.
