I get a feeling that 99% of this thread is ONE Herndon mom and ONE GF mom. Get a life and let this post die. |
I think you are correct. I am neither, but I read it anyway. In fact, I've wondered if the Herndon mom inadvertently created onegreatfalls by demanding that Great Falls kids go to Herndon and Hurchison kids to Langley. It was shortly after those posts started on this forum that the Great Falls parents attended the work session. |
Some of Herndon dad/mom including the person who started this thread seem very unhappy and desperately want to move GF kids to HHS. They keep posting pretty much same messages to keep the thread current. But still no answer on why the county has to move kids from an under enrolled school to a crowded school. |
Langley parents are insecure about losing their privilege, but not to the extent that a post of two from a Herndon parent on an anonymous forum would make them start a community group to protect the status quo. One Great Falls is mostly a response to repeated suggestions by FCPS personnel over the years that the western part of the Langley district will be “rebounderied” when a new high school is built. Politicians saw an opportunity to blame that on the One Fairfax policy, when it would just be a typical boundary adjustment. |
Not nearly as insecure as all the jealous haters who are desperate to take it away from them. Really ugly feelings on display here! |
No dog in this fight, but the Langley posters do seem to be almost pathological in their need to always have the last word, which does suggest a deep insecurity. But feel free to prove me wrong and let the thread die. |
Disagree. It was crystal clear from those work sessions that they want to implement OneFairfax even when it is not logical--i.e. underenrolled school with no nearby poor kids. The comments made by Hynes and Strauss were especially clear. |
Some people in Great Falls actually agree with the way the school board views the equity question. Most Great Falls residents didn't visit the school board meeting in July. Posters saying Langley is "top dog" represent some people I'm sure, but not everyone. Everyone in Great Falls is not the same, anymore than everyone in Herndon is screaming to bus FARM kids out of their school. |
+1 |
Again, why is 2% FARM vs 50% FARM in adjacent pyramids ok?
Stop whining and complaining that you're getting attacked. It's actually not about you. Just answer the question. |
THANK YOU for this post. It explains so much. As someone who has lived here for awhile but didn't grow up here, I was interested in why there is so much vitriol towards Great Falls coming from some Herndon residents. Silly banter/squabbles about schools and neighborhoods is pretty common online, but (some) Herndon residents seem to take the existence of Great Falls and Langley High school as a personal affront. I really did wonder why there was so much energy particularly from Herndon, where other towns and areas don't seem to pay so much attention to GF and LHS. You have given me the answer: in your high school heyday, Great Falls was considered a "hick" area. You are now quite upset that several decades on it is known as the place where the rich folk live, while Herndon is not. Herndon used to be "above" Great Falls. That has changed, and you can't stand it. ("Above" in your own mind. Personally I like Herndon) Great Falls was indeed a rural, farming community at one time. People like you look down farmers. This is nonsensical, considering that without farmers we would all starve quite quickly. I've grown a few vegetables here and there and I really appreciate the labor, knowledge, and dedication it takes to grow enough food to feed yourself, never mind hundreds of others. Given that you look down on agricultural work you probably also look down on other occupations such as sanitation (the people who's work helps prevent pest problems), janitorial (who keep our workplaces and public facilities clean and sanitary, preventing the spread of diseases and just making the places pleasant), and any other job that you feel is beneath you. You are highly upset that the rural, "hick" area has risen above what YOU think is its natural position. You feel the need to inform this forum that--yes--- some Herndon families make money! See us! Validate us! We are rich too! By the power vested in me by the inordinate amount of energy you spend thinking about Great Falls, I hereby declare that there are rich people in Herndon. Be it this day, September 8, 2019, entered into the public record. I can see why someone who derived a great percentage of their self-esteem from looking down on "hick" Great Falls would now be horrified at the turn in events. I recommend that you look elsewhere for validation of your worth and identity. Needing someone else to be low for you to feel good about yourself is extremely unhealthy. Your entire post was extremely classist and very revealing. Thank you for the historical context. This isn't the sort of thing that comes up at Historical Society meetings. I know that John Mellencamp told us to "Hold on to 16 as long as you can," but I'm pretty sure this is NOT what he meant. High School is over, and as much as I loved the 80s, they aren't coming back. Let it go. |
Clap, clap, clap. Do you feel better now? Now, answer the question: Is it fair to you that a 2% FARM pyramid is next to a 50%+ FARM pyramid within the same school system? |
Don't know. Logical? Yes. One school is underenrolled and the other is full. Why would you take bodies from a school that needs them and send them to a school that is full? Is that fair? |
I am that PP. I don't live in Langley. I'm just telling you what I see. Which is jealousy and bitterness. Very unattractive. |
Yes. I see no reason at all that there should be an exactly equal distribution of poor and rich kids across a very large school system. I am totally unperturbed by it. I wonder why you and so many others are so spun up about it. I bet none of the people actually affected by the "unfairness" (low income, non-English speakers in Herndon) ever read DCUM, let alone participate in this forum. I suspect all the people so angry about the "unfairness" are white middle class people whose motives are not good - namely, they want to stick it to the "rich people" in Langley. |
