PSA - NMS PSAT cutoffs for class of 2022.

Mine knew to apply, I think it was in a counseling/career letter, but I thought the application was to be submitted by 4/1 and then they just take the test. Did they have to do something else to submit? Now, I am worried she only did 1/2 of what she needed to do. I agree this is so confusing.

You have until October to send the scores but she won’t be announced in the first round in September.

It was specified when they submitted the form. I think maybe even on the form itself.

I think it would be ok for your child to email the counselor.

Do Virginia schools tend to wait until the NMSC makes the official announcement to tell students they are semifinalists?

DS hasn’t heard anything yet. He thinks he submitted his SAT as alternate entry correctly, but who knows. We think he would make the cutoff. Has anyone from Sidwell heard yet?

My son got notified by his school that he made it in Virginia at 221."

Also at Blair and haven’t heard anything. I have no idea if Blair waits until the press release but I wouldn’t be surprised given how many NMSF the school typically has. And from this thread alone it seems Blair will have many this year.

Wow. Now I really hope they use DCs higher SAT score for the alternate entry. Also, does anyone know if alternate entry is calculated by looking at individual subscores (38, 38, 34) or EBRW/10 X 2 plus math/10?

They use the individual subscores.
"NMSC will use your Reading Test score, Writing and Language Test score, and Math Test score to
calculate your NMSC Selection Index score [2(R + WL + M)]. Your Selection Index score will
determine if you are recognized in the National Merit Scholarship Program. To account for the
differences in scale between the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT, NMSC will cap your SAT test
scores at a maximum of 38 on each test section before calculating your Selection Index score"

They use individual subscores, so your DC didn’t make the cut if in Maryland . Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, although this year was extremely hard to qualify! Kudos to them for a great SAT score!

This year is a mess. They are allowing students until October to turn in their eligible score but if you didn't get the form with your name and very little information in by April 1st, you're out of luck. Last year it was October for both, so it's odd to make that change. Schools also didn't do a good job of letting students know about the alternate route even with cancellations of PSATs in some districts. I know students who would qualify and are out because they weren't aware of the alternate route until it was too late. In a pandemic when there were so many things going on, keeping October for both to allow more time for all qualifying students to figure everything out would have been helpful. I'm not sure this year's NMSF and NMF will really reflect the best of the best.

Our GC called College Board today and our child will have until Oct 1st to submit the scores. She will not be included in any Sept recognition (school, community, etc), but will be eligible to move forward toward NMF -- and should feel comfortable listing NMSF in any ED/EA apps. She earned a 1560 in March in MD
She did not get any form in, and will still be eligible. Unless their parents did it without their knowledge, several of the kids told the GC department that they did not self-submit. It is definitely a mess.
