Get up.
Make an effort.
Stop being an ass.
Make a plan with everyone involved.
Love is a verb.
This dog and your kids deserve better.

Look in the mirror to see the awful person, PP.

OP, the dog deserves nothing. You deserve happiness and peace with your family.

Get rid of the dog. Today.

What?! The dog deserves a loving home, attention, and care. OP may not be the person to provide these things, but the dog certainly deserves them.

No it doesn’t. A dog is a pet that exists for the enjoyment of the family who owns them. It’s an animal and doesn’t intrinsically deserve a loving home anymore than say, a thanksgiving turkey or a slaughterhouse pig. What makes you think a dog “deserves” all these things? If having a dog enriches ops family life they should keep it. If not, get rid of it. It’s really pretty simple. Some of you people are completely insane. It’s just an animal!

And the church says, Amen.

Which is why these situations start.

PP, the dog is a sentient living creature. Ironically, any animal would be more concerned about your well-being than you would be about the animal’s. And you don’t deserve it.

This is what aggravates me about “mom advice”. Now on top of all the other BS, she has to manage a chore chart and find a class and get her husband to commit to it. It’s the wife’s busy work, mental toil, unfulfilled time spent and likely wasted. Aggravation.

+ 1 I am building up an unhealthy amount of rage toward these people. Well toward most people but especially those who just always say to work harder if you are the mom. I’be done enough and so has OP.

I agree. She is the one who didn’t even really want a dog. Husband should be the one doing this. And expecting the kids to do this is stupid. Sure they’ll do it for a month but then they have activities, are sick, it’s raining and dark and who sends an 8 yr old outside by herself to walk a young dog around anyway (it’s not like a walk in front the house will really help). Most puppies need to have long walks. Get rid of the dog OP. Don’t get another pet unless you want it. Your husband has shown that he doesn’t really want to put in the work. He remembers having a fun dog and his mom did all the work caring for it.

No animal would prioritize and animal of a different species over their own offspring, as people are suggesting op do.

During the pandemic that turned into a huge stressor and they sent the dog to some boot camp where someone else trained him.

Short of that you need to just have a come to Jesus moment with your spouse.

People are lazy AF. It takes about 2 weeks max to house train a dog. Train them young and it is a breeze. Walk around with a belted pouch with mini dry treats and they will do whatever you want. Add a clicker for good behavior and there is nothing much to train a dog past 4 weeks in the house.

You made the mistake of not setting up written guidelines and have everyone sign them. Dogs that are ignored and deemed bad because you and your family don't want to put in a small effort to train them suffer long term. If you are ALL at home, there is no need for this dog to not be trained, healthy, and loved.

No offense, but people suck. Dogs do not.

Is this a family or a business? Written contract?!

Humans spent thousands of years domesticating and controlling the breeding of dogs. We, as a species, are responsible for creating dog breeds that can’t just go live in the wild on their own. OP didn’t acquire this dog to use it as a food source for her family. She’s not going to slaughter it. It will likely live for years to come. As a living thing that exists in its current state only because of human intervention, humans owe it to this animal to give it the life it has been bred for.

I disagree with you that the dog deserves nothing, but I agree with you that OP needs to return the dog.

This is really it. He remembers having a dog as being all fun, because his mom did all the work. Now he wants to recreate that, with Mom doing all the work again.

Are some of you posting on here about how dogs are just animals and deserve nothing different from a pig or a Turkey from a different culture or country? In the U.S. we have laws against animal cruelty. The dog does have rights here in the U.S. Yes, animals have rights.

Nobody is telling mom to beat the dog or leave it by the side of the road. Dropping off at a shelter or contacting a rescue organization are perfectly legal options. And yes, a dog is an animal just like a pig. You can’t beat either but there are legal options for getting rid of both.

Yes, exactly. I'm from the US and I have been posting that dogs are just animals...because they are. What is this "dogs have rights"?

Um, b/c they do? It is not the same as the rights people have but they do have them.

A dog should have the same amount of rights as a chicken, turkey or pig.
