Caved and we got a dog , big mistake

Dogs are not for everyone OP.

If she or one of the kids doesn't start doing the majority of dog care, it's time to re-home or take back for rehoming.

People keep saying that she should rehome the dog, but if the husband and the children wanted the dog, it's not going to be easy to get rid of the dog.

Get up.
Make an effort.
Stop being an ass.
Make a plan with everyone involved.
Love is a verb.
This dog and your kids deserve better.

Look in the mirror to see the awful person, PP.

OP, the dog deserves nothing. You deserve happiness and peace with your family.

Get rid of the dog. Today.

What?! The dog deserves a loving home, attention, and care. OP may not be the person to provide these things, but the dog certainly deserves them.

No it doesn’t. A dog is a pet that exists for the enjoyment of the family who owns them. It’s an animal and doesn’t intrinsically deserve a loving home anymore than say, a thanksgiving turkey or a slaughterhouse pig. What makes you think a dog “deserves” all these things? If having a dog enriches ops family life they should keep it. If not, get rid of it. It’s really pretty simple. Some of you people are completely insane. It’s just an animal!

Which is why these situations start.

PP, the dog is a sentient living creature. Ironically, any animal would be more concerned about your well-being than you would be about the animal’s. And you don’t deserve it.

To be fair cows and pigs are sentient beings. We raise them for no other purpose than to kill them.

Unless you’re vegan, this argument about animal rights is pure hypocrisy. My favorite was a friend who had a pet bunny, yet ate rabbit... so much cognitive dissonance!

Nobody is telling mom to beat the dog or leave it by the side of the road. Dropping off at a shelter or contacting a rescue organization are perfectly legal options. And yes, a dog is an animal just like a pig. You can’t beat either but there are legal options for getting rid of both.

But do it quickly. Don’t wait until the dog ages out.

I have a beautiful smart well trained popular dog breed. But I just don’t love her. It’s a tough decision but better sooner than later for a rehome.

OP, your husband sucks. He needs to step up, but he’s not the one here asking for advice. Does he admit that he’s lazy?

It's all hypocrisy. People keep fish as pets but still eat fish and they're not raised by people to be killed. They're swimming in the ocean or rivers minding their own business but we catch, kill and eat them.

Did you rehome your dog? If you have kids how well did they take it? I’m considering. Being at home hasn’t made it easier to keep her.

Rehome the dog. Your DH and kids obviously don’t want the responsibility that comes with ownership.

What happens if DH and kids don't want the dog rehomed? It's not OP's decision alone.

It is if she's the only one taking care of the dog.

Good luck with that. The rest of the family want the dog, she doesn't. I can see issues arising if she takes it upon herself to rehome the animal.

Rehoming the dog still needs to be a family decision.

So she can choose not to take care of the dog any longer. Don’t feed it, walk it, bathe it. Let’s see if the family picks up her slack. If not, the dog gets rehomed.

Well, issues are already arising because no one is taking care of the dog. I think she should give them a month to step up and an ultimatum. If they don't, the dog goes back. "We all have to agree or else we get to keep the pet and you have to do all the work" is not fair.

and what do you think the "climate" in the house will like if the rest of the family come home to find out that she alone has decided to rehome the pet? Besides, we're only hearing one side of the story here...her side.
