God you people are horrible at math. It's shocking.

Have not read this whole thread, but since the discussion is continuing - I thought this article that talks about Bots from China and Russia that are purposely spreading misinformation in the US was illuminating. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/dygnwz/if-youre-talking-about-coronavirus-on-twitter-youre-probably-a-bot

Please remember- United we stand, divided we fall. Let's work on being civil in our discourse, try to understand there are others purposely sowing seeds of discontent among us and ignore them (potential bots). Remember that if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

Now you figure out what percentage of Americans have at least one of those conditions.

I'll give you a head start. Over 40% of Americans, including our President, are obese.

Exactly! For people 35+, 58% of people have pre existing conditions. Ages 45+, 73%. And for Americans 55 and older, 86%.

As this is DCUM let's focus on the DMV and total deaths for simplicity

All stats via basic google searches

Total deaths

DC 231 assume 3/4 are older folks and/or folks with preexisting conditions 58 normal people deaths
MD 1,047 over 50% Nursing Homes 500 1/2+ preexisting 250 normal people deaths
VA 552 over 50% Nursing Homes 250 1/2+ preexisting 125 normal people deaths

For the math below I'm taking total total state population divided by 2 to find out healthy adult population

DC 58/350000 = .016% death rate for healthy adults
MD 250/3000000 = .0083% death rate for healthy adults
VA 125/4500000 = .0028% death rate for healthy adults

NP here. If you’re not going to back up your “stats” with sources or links then don’t even bother discussing numbers and percentages. We need to see the sources of your information.

Well she is also using the entire state population as the denominator for the death rate, which only makes sense if everyone in the state was infected? Is that really what I am seeing? Similar issue with the stroke rate. Also seems like the percentage of ‘normal healthy’ adults is completely made up? I feel like either I am crazy or talking to a crazy person. Links are crucial too.

She is a moron who doesn’t understand basic math.

It's just as reasonable as using another number, such as confirmed infections, as the denominator. The actual number of infections is unknown. It is undoubtedly higher than the confirmed infections. This has been true with similar pandemics. Second, the poster is calcuting their total risk of catching and dying from COVID-19. It's certainly approximate given we don't know the true infection numbers or considering other factors like the uneven distribution of cases. But her risk is still quite low as this time.

The actual infection rate is somewhere between one to three orders of magnitude above the confirmed infection rate. This tempers those spouting the nonsense 5% number. Deaths are under reported as well but we don't see the same error there. We do have an upper bound for those. There aren't significant numbers of undiscovered dead people.

No, using the entire population is NOT a reasonable number.

Seriously? Back to this nonsense.

DP. I don't get that impression at all. I'm neutral on the matter and feel that opening gradually is probably the best option. But I can certainly see why some want to open now - especially those dependent on a paycheck. It's ridiculous to say that there are people "spamming" this forum simply because you don't agree with them.

So I understand why OP might wonder if there is some kind of organized group in favor of opening up deliberately causing traffic, though I don’t necessariky think that’s the case.

I think that is the purpose.

It isn't a majority statistically, or probably even amongst regular DCUM users or most people's personal social groups, but by having a number of fast, aggressive and loud posts on anyone who dares speak differently they attempt to create an illusion that everyone is dying to reopen.

The shrillness betrays their lack of support.

Well that’s a strange conclusion when op is the one who openly wants Jeff to delete any post of an opposing viewpoint to her own. Maybe hypocritical is a better word than strange.

That’s not what OP said at all. MAGA morons can’t do math OR read.

Nothing makes people less credible than wacky conspiracy theories. People post their opinions, no one is coordinating to convey anything, I think it was the right wingers with the tin foil hats, but op is proving there are people with unjustified paranoia on both sides of the political spectrum.

Understatement of the century.

There are no "bots" on DCUM. Jeff has repeatedly shot down this suggestion. By continuing to insist there are, it is YOU who is spreading misinformation.

PP didn’t “disagree with me”. PP simply has poor reading comprehension, as do you.

Try to do some math next. That should be fun.

There seems to be an organized campaign coming from Trump and his supporters that people's right to get their hair cut or got to the mall is more important than preventing Covid from killing the elderly and the vulnerable. And that's being pushed - hard - by posters on this board. Now maybe they're all just parroting Limbaugh or whoever, but it is interesting that it all started at the same time. And it's strange it's so common on this board when it's quite uncommon among the Trumpers I know in real life.

Just saw a CNN interview with Chris Christie, where he compares soldiers in WW2 dying to people dying of coronavirus.

"We sent our young men during World War Two over to Europe, out to the Pacific, knowing, knowing that many of them would not come home alive," he said, adding: "And we decided to make that sacrifice because what we were standing up for was the American way of life. In the very same way now, we have to stand up for the American way of life."

Thanks Jeff, I see you found the "let the old and fat die" from this "MSM hyped flu" PP and have excised his propaganda.

Now if he wants to have reasonable (at least by DCUM standards) discussions, we welcome that, but I assume his handler is not paying for that.

Why? The poster is a member of the general population. The risk the poster catching AND dying from COVID-19 is approximately deaths over the general population. The risk of catching COVID-19 is infections over the general population (assuming that you WILL get infected if you meet someone with COVID-19): infections/gen_pop. The chance of dying is dead/infections.

Saw some of it last night in this thread but there are other examples as well:

It's not that people are posting different ideas, it's that the usually give and take of forum messages are a few one way a few the other: this seemed to be more organized 'dog piling'.

Been seeing it more frequently recently in a number of threads

Anyway, not sure how you would manage that. Just thought I'd mention the observation.

I don’t think there are Russians here, but trolling techniques are universal and used by conservative disinformation campaigns too.

Anyway, Putin’s troll farm often would work in groups, where two or more trolls would reply to each other’s posts, and pile on those they disagreed with.

That’s an effective way to derail real discussion.

The MAGAs on DCUM often do seem to work in pairs. One posts something about Biden. The second poster quickly plus-ones and adds a few words like "that's hilarious" and some inane emojis like
