Not sure if you updated again OP but I would definitely go quietly. I would acknowledge it with him ahead of time that you are planning to come.

If you care about the family and close friends of the deceased you go if you can make it.

It's that she **does not know** the deceased OR her son (beyond maybe a total of 6 hrs). Are you trying to say that everyone I mention my relative's upcoming funeral to is just going to show up? That would be weird. Come on.
