Serena is a bully and a crybaby

Absolutely Ramos could not take being scolded by a woman, a black woman at that.
Add that to the linesman who full on gave a pep talk to what’s-his-name earlier in the tourney.
And women get called for turning a shirt right-side-out while men sit shirtless.
Then today, at the after presser, a reported asks Serena what she’s gonna tell her 1 yr old about her behavior today.

The double standard is blatant and disgusting. Tennis: do better.

I agree. The USTA player development was run by John McEnroe's talentless brother Patrick for so long. He and Courier and some of the other people who had a say in how things were run and what kids were picked for development were notorious for being tone deaf re racial issues. Many black players were given poor treatment by the USTA. Serena's dad knew this and kept them away from the official tennis machine and did it all himself. Donald Young's family did the same. I remember the insults commentators would throw at the Williams sisters back in the day. There was a lot of hatred for their form and how unfair it was that they won on athleticism. What the hell does that even mean in a physical sport? Let's translate that: these muscular black who play aggressive, heavy hitting tennis are more valued if they are cute and blonde. How dare they overpower the other "girls" How unfair!. They were insulted because they looked different and played hard. It wasn't that long ago that Patrick McEncroe and Courier were insulting Donald Young because of the way he dressed and his gold chains. Google the crap that Patrick McEnroe said about Taylor Townsend and tell me about tennis and it's sexist and racist. The people who ran the USTA for decades got away with this and looked the other way when one of their coaches who travelled extensivelly with minor girls sexually abused girls and looked away. They knew about it for so long and more girls got molested.

I feel bad for Osaka. All this drama really distracted from her win. And, from what I saw - she genuinely deserved the win. She played better. The stats prove that as well.

One thing that bothered me about Serena’s reaction was when she was complaining to the chair umpire about not being coached she said something like, “I have a daughter and I have to do right by her.” WHAT? Who the hell cares if you have a daughter now? This is not at all pertinent to the issue. Would a man say this to the chair? Nope.

I agree that Serena is a bully (this was not the first incident.... one that comes to mind is when she threatened a judge by saying she would cram the ball down her throat if she could (with profanity included).

Congrats to Osaka. She was humble and displayed great sportsmanship. And, she played a great game, despite the controversy.

+1. Osaka played an excellent match but was robbed of the moment by a petulant, selfish and unnecessarily combative opponent. And for that young woman to hold her composure and maintain her focus through Serena’s antics and delays of game was remarkable

The OP ‘s title of this thread says it all - Serena is a bully and a crybaby. How does being a Mom enter into the initial conversation with the umpire about cheating? She started coming to the net immediately after the “coaching”occurred. So, she was coached. Which is cheating, whether she is a mother or not.

Serena certainly could have acted better but the ump was out of line sexist! Serena is an amazing champion. One of the greatest athletes of our generation and a role model. She was in the heat of moment being treated unfairly and could have responded more gracefully. It happens, leave it at that.

Yesterday, she was treated the way she was treated because of her coach’s behavior and because of her behavior. Period.

I don’t consider her a role model at all. A great athlete - yes. But, I would never want my daughter behaving like she has - in this match and in the past.
Yes, she could have responded more appropriately.
After the accusation of coaching, she came back and won the next game easily - with a couple of aces. The commentators (I think it was Mary Carillo) said she knows how to handle her anger.... or something like that. But, she really doesn’t. Otherwise, she would not have broken her racquet which led to the point penalty.
She would have been respected more by many had she directed her “anger” at actually winning and not playing the victim. That is what winning athletes do.

Ramos is a thief and worse. I hope his career is done.

Ramos enforced the rules. It’s not his job to compare himself or his actions to other umpires who handle rules differently. It’s his job to enforce the rules. Not doing so is like the excuse “everyone else does it, so I should, too”.

7:40- I hope your kid doesn’t play sports. I can imagine you teaching him/her not to respect rules, referees or umpires.

Real athletes are allowed to and encouraged to question the referee. They are not perfect and they make mistakes.

Question, yes. Berate, threaten, call names, no. And, move on and play.

Absolutely they are allowed to question the referee. She took it too far. She demanded an apology. Multiple times. Then, called him a thief.
Had she just questioned him, there would not have been an issue. It was all the other crap she said and did.
