Follow the rules.

Control your temper.

Don't make bad things worse.

Think about your team.

Don't insult others.

Most athletes master this by the time they are 15-16. Certainly before they are 30.

She didn’t insult others or had a team like soccer players do. It’s also questionable if rules were applied to her equitably. Yes, she acted immature and made things worse, but so did many other professional athletes before (including many soccer or tennis male players). Somehow it doesn’t make them less professional in the eyes of spectators, but she got ostracized for making an angry or frustrated face during the game

Did you happen to see the highlight reel of her being abusive/aggressive to others? This is a pattern for her.

I don't think it was just an angry face that got her in this hot water. She said some very rude things and made a very childish threat "You'll never be on my court again..."

Maybe she should focus on being a mom and take a break.

This. She made a fool of herself, just like any other adult having a big fat temper tantrum.

Nah. The ref made a fool of himself by being discriminatory. That started all of this. Could she have handled it better? Sure. But, the same can be said for many male tennis players over the years (and the men have come to her defense to say so). People are upset b/c a strong woman acted, well, strongly. That's the heart of all of this and it is plain as day.

Deborah Barros, a candidate for Alabama State Senate, wrote in a tweet on Saturday that it was “funny how a black female tennis player is held to a higher standard to keep her emotions in check than a Supreme Court nominee.”

How much do you want to bet that the very same people who tried to slam Ms. Williams for her actions at the U.S. Open, were either silent or supportive of Mr. Kavanaugh's behavior during his testimony before Congress and our nation?

How much you wanna bet?

She is one of the greatest athletes of all time and from the time she and her sister started winning majors they have been misrepresented, maligned, and borne the brunt of many racist attacks. That chair ump is a sexist, holier than though prig. I'm very pissed that action was taken against Mohammed but not this jerk.

Congratulations to Coco G. for her success.
She’s a real winner, and a nice person.

What does this have to do with Serena unless you are referring to the fact that CoCo has said she looks up to Serena and wouldn’t have the opportunities she has without Serena paving the way for her. CoCo has a poster of Serena on her walll in her bedroom. I’m sure that’s what you meant with your post.

And yes keep going CoCo!! CoCo has her own thread though where people are talking about her at the Citi Open. Check it out!

Yeah. Always racism or sexism. Never accountability for awful behavior. Why do other black women or women of other color not have the same issue??? Hmm.

There are many people who support Serena that agree that she was out of line. The issue for some of us is not that she was called and penalized on her behavior, but that she was penalized disproportionately to many other players, in particular players who are male or white. For example, it's been pointed out the Nick Kyrgios and Fabio Fognini have been behaved far worse than Serena and gotten far less punishment for their actions. Retired players John McEnroe and Andy Roddick have both been just as abusive as Serena was and got far lower penalties that Serena did. The problem is the fact that Serena has received the biggest and worst penalties for actions that have been excused or minimally penalized by other players.

It's the driving while black argument and no one has actually come out with a reason why Serena deserves a worse penalty than male or white players do.

What Andy Roddick and John Macenroe did is far worse than anything Serena did. Macenroe ruined tennis for a lot of people and he and his brother practically run American tennis. Let's not forget the comments the more idiotic brother said about Taylor Townsend. They never paid for the horrible things they did and they did horrible things CONSTANTLY. I agree with a poster upthread who is angry that Mohammad was punished but this sexist chair ump was not. You can also tell Serena bends over backwards now not to offend anyone. People want to hate her because she isn't petite, white, non threatening. Even when she played doubles with Andy Murray she was so obsequious and subservient to him. She was the better player but tried to show she wasn't the aggressive wild animal the racists have tried to make her out to be.

Look at the way Kyrios acts and players like Federer and Murray still support him and make exuses for him.

Why are you making excuses for her? At her worst Serena is a threatening, violent presence who makes court officials feel concerned for their own personal safety and security. The white male players you mentioned just talk trash.

Not that it really matters - she is past her prime now and should retire soon.

This post is a textbook illustration of how racism and misogyny work. I'm sure that PP believes this nonsense is true for because the voices in his/her head say so, but in fact the opposite is true.

Serena did threaten a lineswoman during a match, but has never been physically violent toward an opponent, an official, or a ball-person.

Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic had a fist fight in the locker room after their 2008 US open match.

John McEnroe has been in at least two physical altercations -- one with Scott Davis and one with John Newcombe.

Kyrgios got into a physical altercation with Radek Stepanek during the French Open and with Wawrinka in Montreal.

Fognini said that Wimbledon should be bombed, and he's been repeatedly fined and suspended for abusive, misogynistic and threatening language toward female officials. But he's a white man, so PP calls it "trash talk."

You forgot Pliskova who smashed up a wooden umpire chair with her racket while the umpire was still in it because she didn’t like a call the umpire made.
