Serena is a bully and a crybaby

Thats because all the commentators were siding towards Serena to win. Chris Evert, Pam Shriver and Mary Joe Fernandez should not be allowed as commentators going forward if they are biased towards a player. They should be neutral.

American commentators always root for Americans or, when not available, for their favorites (e.g. Federer). It's somewhat annoying but nowhere close to the US open crowd which is as vicious as it is provincial. I have been to us open many times and it's the worst.

Osaka has dual Japanese and American citizenship. She was born in Japan and has lived in the US since the age of three. So she is just as American as many other immigrants and other holders of dual citizenship are.

Wikipedia says that the family decided to use the mother's last name instead of the father's for practical reasons in Japan. Her father's surname is François.

Yep.

I know the commentators were saying that the men do a lot worse. That said, the way she threw the racket and calling the ump a "thief' were pretty awful to me. Do the men call the umps names? To me, calling him a thief--telling him that he stole her point-was pretty bad. That's worse to me that profanity or vulgarity. It's not the same thing as calling him a mf or something like that.

She was way out of line and her first interview was not very good. Later, her words in an interview were better. But, after the tournament, when she was interviewed at the presser, she was complaining about sexism. There may be sexism, but that was not why she lost. It was not a good look for her--especially when she has done so well. And, it certainly diminished Osaka's win. Poor Sport, Serena.

Rafael Nadal yelled at that same umpire that he’d never be allowed to ref his games again. That outburst resulted in no penalty.

But on another note: Osaka barely claims her Haitian roots

She embraces both her Japanese and Haitian roots. And yes the Haitian part makes her part African, you know the slave trade and all that...

Come on. Just stop.

Stop what? Celebrating her BLACKNESS????? Can't stand it, can you. Heeeeheeeee.

Also Djokivic had an incident with him as well.

I’m a regular tennis watcher and could post a lot of videos of men GOING OFF on umpires and I’ve never seen a game point penalty given. Yes, I know what the rules are so enforce them equally then.

She threatened the referee with never being allowed to officiate one of her tournaments, not to mention insulting him (during her childish tantrum).

Yes - this was bullying on national display.

NO it was not. I have followed tennis for over 40 years. I never miss a major and watch almost all tournaments. YOU DO NOT KNOW PROFESSIONAL TENNIS.

What we saw today was absolute sexist bullshit.

Coaching happens all the time and no one gets called for it. On the men's side, the coaches are practically on the court with a notebook.

What Serena's coach did was so minimal and meaningless it was ridiculous for her to be called for it.

The chair umpire inserted himself into the match like an egotist. There are so many players who go off on line judges and chair umps and usually, at most, they get a warning. What Serena did was so ridiculously mild. Singles tennis is an intense mental game and screwing with a player like Carlos did is horrible. It just doesn't happen.

Rafa threatened the ump with never officiating again that and got nothing but a warning. Rafa got into it with Carlos Bernardes and threatened his job. All of tennis supported Rafa. David Ferrer, who was loved by all, went off on a female chair ump when she warned him for cursing and he had a nice little tantrum screaming at her that "You are a woman, women can't do anything" and on. I don't think he was even fined. At another tournament Ferrer hit a ball with his racquet in anger and hit a linesman. The umpire did nothing. Leyton Hewitt got pissed when he got called for foot faults when playing against James Blake and accused the chair ump of who was black of calling in favor of Blake who was also black. No fine. No penalty no nothing. I can go on for days about things Hewitt. He called a line judge and idiot and the chair ump a moron and everyone put up with it. Andy Roddick, omg, what he got away with. He loved to tell chair umps in lovely terms that they were intellectually deficient. John Isner also goes nuts pretty often. So many of the players have their moments. I could go on for days about the fits tennis players have thrown and directed at umps and lines people. Agassi was another great one. He screamed at a chair ump to get his fat ass out of the chair and check a mark on the court. No fine. He spit on a chair umpire who let it go until after he saw the tv footage. I was surprised they actually punished Fabio Fognini for calling the female chair ump a whore and a pig. These are just some of the instances I remember. I could google every top 20 player and find matches where they went off and got a warning at most.

What is a basic truth about tennis is that the top male players rarely get called out for their behavior. Only Nick Kyrios gets any punishment and he's a complete ass. Everyone bends over backwards to pat him on the back when he acts decent for 5 minutes. One of the best chair umps of all time, Mohamed Lahyani, got bad press because during one of Kyrios' matches last week he came down from his chair to ENCOURAGE this asshat when he started acting like an asshat.

I've read tennis forums for as long as they have existed on the internet and, across the board until the last 5 years, the comments about Serena have been vile, disgusting, and racist. Anytime any one mentioned a match the comments about her looking like and ape, or a pig, or being fat piled on. Guys I knew who could discuss tennis rationally became cretins when it came to Serena. She isn't a svelte traditionally cute little something who minces her words and she has paid for this. That is sexist. I dont know what changed so that people recognized her greatness, but now I see more people defending her.

I'm not even going to try to explain to you people who know nothing about tennis about the unfair and racist crap she has had to put up with.

If Serena was so great she would have just smiled and taken the warning in her stride but she chose to bully the umpire. Her "Don't you know who I am" attitude has been around forever. People who support her are just ignorant.

You don't know tennis at all. Players never get called for coaching and what her coach did was so ridiculous compared to what other, particularly male coaches do, that it was ridiculous. So many players go off and get completely rattled when they're called for a code violation that insane behavior often follows. That behavior is rarely penalized. What Serena said to the chair umpire was not worthy of her losing a game. That NEVER happens in professional tennis. The players are often fined afterwards but a good chair ump knows the players are under an insane amount of pressure and do everything they can to difuse the situation. Carlos completely disrupted the US Open final. He is an idiot and should lose his job.

Serena is a great champion. The pressure of being outplayed by a younger player got to her today.
Serena will continue to be a great champion, but she was out of line. Demanding an apology, calling the ump a sexist, referencing her daughter during her tirade, screams sour grapes.
Win with class and lose with dignity. Serena has always won with class. She was not a good loser today.

Anyone who watched knows that Naomi was on fire today. There was zero chance Serena could have won, with or without the penalties.

I feel bad Naomi's truly magnificent first grand slam victory was clouded by Serena's poor behavior. It was so sad to see her cry and cover her face when booed during the award ceremony.

on the other hand Serena is... complicated. she is a legend, the best of all time with an interesting life. at the same time, she is entitled and takes for granted that everything is about her and she should be the center of everything. e.g. she is by no means the first mother on tour but judging from her behavior you would think she is.

Serena isn't the only mother on the tour but because of Serena the WTA is finally doing things to help mothers on the tour. She is vocal about being a mom because it helps other mothers who work. It helps other women on the tour. The WTA had done little to help players deal with traditionaly "women's issues". Venus Williams has had a major part in advocating for equal pay and better benefits for women on the tour. Serena has had both a wonderful and a hard life. I don't get your use of interesting. She has struggled with many issues - her parents divorce, scandals, her sister's murder, having a relationship with a player who used her just to help Sharapova, being insulted right and left for her looks, she has admitted that until her marriage she has struggled to find love. She has money and althetic prowess but has struggled in so many other ways. She's not entitled.

Fixed it for you. Carlos overreacted and showed his ass today.

Absolutely Ramos could not take being scolded by a woman, a black woman at that.
Add that to the linesman who full on gave a pep talk to what’s-his-name earlier in the tourney.
And women get called for turning a shirt right-side-out while men sit shirtless.
Then today, at the after presser, a reported asks Serena what she’s gonna tell her 1 yr old about her behavior today.

The double standard is blatant and disgusting. Tennis: do better.

There is a rule that players have to serve with 30 seconds of the previous point ending. The chair umps have ignored this for decades. They finally agreed to start enforcing it because Djokovic and Rafa make tennis impossible to watch and cause matches to last a life time. The ATP finally decided to start enforcing the rule but it is murky because each chair ump can decide however they want to interpret when the previous point ended. Rafa got into it with chair ump Carlos Bernardes over time code violation warnings and said during the match he would never ump a match of his again. He had a few other choice words. Guess what happened. The ATP agreed to Rafa's request and Bernardes doesn't ump any of his matches.

Yes, it was the actions of the chair umpire that clouded Osaka's win. Being awarded a point and then an entire game without playing them is what clouded her victory, not the actions of Serena. Serena was standing up for herself and had every reason to be upset with the actions of the chair umpire.

That point and game should have been played by the two players on the court, not simply handed to one player by the umpire. Had they actually played the point and the game, the eventual winner could have felt much more confident about that victory. Anyone would feel uncomfortable about a win in which she hadn't actually won a point and a whole game on the court against an opponent, but had them awarded by the umpire instead. Just an odd circumstance for the players to have to deal with.
