Everything Sally Jenkins just wrote: this was a Ramos power play.
Absolutely Ramos could not take being scolded by a woman, a black woman at that. Add that to the linesman who full on gave a pep talk to what’s-his-name earlier in the tourney. And women get called for turning a shirt right-side-out while men sit shirtless. Then today, at the after presser, a reported asks Serena what she’s gonna tell her 1 yr old about her behavior today. The double standard is blatant and disgusting. Tennis: do better.
I agree. The USTA player development was run by John McEnroe's talentless brother Patrick for so long. He and Courier and some of the other people who had a say in how things were run and what kids were picked for development were notorious for being tone deaf re racial issues. Many black players were given poor treatment by the USTA. Serena's dad knew this and kept them away from the official tennis machine and did it all himself. Donald Young's family did the same. I remember the insults commentators would throw at the Williams sisters back in the day. There was a lot of hatred for their form and how unfair it was that they won on athleticism. What the hell does that even mean in a physical sport? Let's translate that: these muscular black who play aggressive, heavy hitting tennis are more valued if they are cute and blonde. How dare they overpower the other "girls" How unfair!. They were insulted because they looked different and played hard. It wasn't that long ago that Patrick McEncroe and Courier were insulting Donald Young because of the way he dressed and his gold chains. Google the crap that Patrick McEnroe said about Taylor Townsend and tell me about tennis and it's sexist and racist. The people who ran the USTA for decades got away with this and looked the other way when one of their coaches who travelled extensivelly with minor girls sexually abused girls and looked away. They knew about it for so long and more girls got molested.
