Why does everyone hate Walmart?

Why do all my Chevy Chase mom/professional women friends feel OK about buying mass produced, cheap, sweat shop goods from China at Target.com or Amazon.com but not Walmart.com?

I'm serious. Let's use the ice cube tray as an example. Or a navy bath mat. (not "cute" skirts by <designer X for Target>

If you have verifiable data about the superiority about Target starting wages for unskilled workers, or about health insurance benefits for hourly Target employees, or the ability for Target hourly workers to have a fixed schedule every week, I would love to hear it.

Here’s Target appearing on this list of the world’s most ethical companies. Walmart does not appear.

It's like a United Nations wacko bazaar in there.

Why won't Amazon pay a living wage?

I hate Walmart because of the bottom of the barrel employees they hire and the fact that the store is full of poor white trash families. Sorry but it’s the truth.

Been to Costco at Pentagon City?

I don’t see a difference in Walmart shoppers vs Target shoppers. I don’t see a plethora of overweight questionable characters shopping at Walmart. The shoppers look normal to me.

Walmart has great prices and a nice selection. I just hate hunting for a parking spot there, and waiting in the checkout lines. So I typically go to Target if I need to grab something. Thankfully I’m not much of a shopper anyway.

My thoughts whenever I go to Walmart:
POOR customer service.
Smells like cheap plastic.
Grimy.
Thank God for Target.

+1

My mom says places like Wal-Mart help perpetuate poverty. You spend less per item, but it's often poor quality, so you end up spending more over time. Also, IME, their customer service is terrible, and they treat their employees poorly. They use heavy-handed anti-union tactics. They are frequently penalized for wage theft (both failing to pay overtime and compelling employees to work off the clock).

Wal-Mart isn't unique in any of these things, but they are big enough and profitable enough that this stuff is particularly egregious, and makes them a symbol of corporate greed.

The quality of the exact same brand shampoo, contact fluid, tampons, hand soap and cleaning supplies is EXACTLY the same at my Walmart as anywhere else and is cheaper. I do not buy much from amazon because I do not like having even more unreliable delivery drivers on the streets of DC. Bezos should have to fund USPS.

Do your even live around here? That does not even describe the Walmart population in this area at all.

1) I need super-duper special snowflake Kotex thanks to perimenopause. They are literally twice as expensive on Amazon as they are at our local Walmart.
2) My husband likes to drink Powerade Zero - again, much more expensive on Amazon or in our local grocery store.

Gross. Tap water, chemicals, and food dye all wrapped up in a plastic bottle that will be used for a few minutes but litter the earth for a lifetime.
Honestly people - enjoy your cancer.

What I like about Walmart -
1) It has a huge inventory. If I have to buy toothpaste, I can find most brands at Walmart, even brands like Tom of Maine that cost a lot at Whole Foods.
2) Pricing is better than anywhere else. It is substantially cheaper than other stores.
3) You can finish most of your shopping in one stop.
4)Huge car park
5) Opens early and remains open till late (check it out on Sunday at 9 pm! )
6) I like their garden centers. prices are quite good.
7) Good return policies

What I don't like about Walmart -
1) Need to hire more competent people. Slowest cashiers. Angry employees. Poor language skills.
2) Poor pay attracts the unhappiest people.
3) Return lines are incredibly long and very slow. Very surly employees.
4) Very often they will not water plants in the garden centers and the plants start to wilt.
5) Shelves are over stuffed with merchandise and they do not straighten it as often as they need.

I will never stop using Walmart and Costco. Mainly because the price difference is nothing to sneeze about. Walmart groceries are very good and comparable to what the grocery stores are carrying. Back to School merchandise was a fraction of cost than in Target and Staples. Besides, I was able to shop for everything in one place. From pencils, paper, to project supplies, calculators and USB sticks.

The crowds are less at certain times of the day. Mornings on weekdays are great. Evenings on weekends are the worst.
