| A teacher came out of retirement to fill in at my child’s FCPS elementary during an extended leave. It’s crazy. |
| With no real incentive to save leave I have noticed that newer teachers tend to use more of it. I can't blame them, it is a benefit, but I think it adds to the number of absences across the county. |

The retirement system does not count unused leave toward years of service. So, yeah, there is no incentive to save leave. I also think that larger class sizes lead to more exhaustion and use of leave. |
For more senior teachers unused leave can be added on as years service at retirement. Newer teachers don't have that benefit. They forfeit any unused leave when they retire or leave the district. Large class sizes definitely can lead to exhaustion and use of leave. I was in that spot last year. |
| Please remember, some of this need comes from teacher training --it is not all illness or personal leave. |
I have missed several days of school because of teacher "training". You parents need to wake up to what is going on in our schools. As for subbing. I am probably going to switch to subbing next year. I've had enough. |
And even if it is illness and personal leave would you rather teachers burn out and have a huge staff turnover every year? |
You certainly missed the point here. I pointed out that much of this was from teacher training -not condemning use of sick leave or personal leave. The system owes the teachers that--rightly. But, the system is encouraging and demanding too many days of teacher training when the kids are in school. If every teacher in a school misses ONE day during the year for training, with a staff of 30 teachers, that would be 30 days of subs. This is happening in most schools--and many schools have staffs far larger than 30 teachers. Those are subs that could be in the classroom for sick teachers. |
How many teacher work days do you guys have? We are in dcps right now (will be moving to Virginia in a year so I follow here too) and so far this year we have had one so far and then they are off this Friday too and November 3rd for conferences. Kids are out for 9 PD days and 3 conference days. Does your schedule compare? Teachers aren’t taken out of a lot of days here but I feel like it’s a lot of time for the kids to be out. |
In FCPS there are 7 that fall during the student calendar. |
It has been a long time (years) since I have been pulled from the classroom for training. I can’t think of the last time. |
Are you in an elementary school? Because the one I am thinking of sure sends a lot of teachers to training. |
Yes. Two teacher household. We are both teachers in elementary schools. |
16:33 here. What trainings have you had that fall during the school day? Are you a curriculum lead? |
| We have training once a month for the worthless PATHWAYS reading program. It’s a total waste because it’s an awful program so we close our door and do what we want with reading anyway, which is what’s best for the kids. (LCPS) |
