Please remember, some of this need comes from teacher training --it is not all illness or personal leave.
And even if it is illness and personal leave would you rather teachers burn out and have a huge staff turnover every year?
You certainly missed the point here. I pointed out that much of this was from teacher training -not condemning use of sick leave or personal leave. The system owes the teachers that--rightly. But, the system is encouraging and demanding too many days of teacher training when the kids are in school. If every teacher in a school misses ONE day during the year for training, with a staff of 30 teachers, that would be 30 days of subs. This is happening in most schools--and many schools have staffs far larger than 30 teachers. Those are subs that could be in the classroom for sick teachers.
How many teacher work days do you guys have? We are in dcps right now (will be moving to Virginia in a year so I follow here too) and so far this year we have had one so far and then they are off this Friday too and November 3rd for conferences. Kids are out for 9 PD days and 3 conference days. Does your schedule compare? Teachers aren’t taken out of a lot of days here but I feel like it’s a lot of time for the kids to be out.
In FCPS there are 7 that fall during the student calendar.
