Question about Friday Night Lights

Question, is high school football in Texas really like that? Meaning, is the depiction accurate, where they invest big money and the team plays at the Cowboys stadium?

Yes. Absolutely. I went to a 5A public school in Texas. You would not believe the amount of money that is spent on football. Skyboxes. Exoduses to Cowboys stadium and Alamodome during the playoffs. It is not joke that it is God, Country and Football in Texas - and not always in that order.

Wait there are 5A schools?! holy shit, I literally thought 3A was the highest nationwide!

I've heard "God Family Football" as a variant too

I'm on Season 2. I love the show but I keep wondering - how realistic is some of this? Not just the teenage drinking but the fact that Riggins has been in adult bars numerous times and got into that fight with those adult men. Sure, he has a fake ID but in this small town everyone knows each other (especially the football players) so they all know he is underage. And he seems to have a constant supply of beer which he is able to buy? And his brother pays for this habit? Also, there is a lot of kids just showing up in each others bedrooms. Like the scene where Riggins busts in Lyla's bedroom while she's getting dressed. My parents would A - never allow a boy in my room and B - even if they did they wouldn't just send him up to my room unannounced like that. The behavior seems so adult like that sometimes I find myself forgetting these are teens. Anyone else?

Love the show, about to be bummed when netflix drops it in 5 days because I'm nowhere near finishing!

I would say in late 90's/early 2000's (can't remember if they specified a year in the series) small town Texas, it is certainly taking some liberties but not unrealistic at all.

The beer thing is for sure an easy one. They all know each other, but that's no impediment to getting beer, especially if you're a football hero. Actually, the bigger the town and the less "connections" you have, the harder it is to get as a teen.

On the bedrooms and people walking in, not unusual for:
- Parents to be doing shift work, not home, single parent households, etc.
- People to leave their doors unlocked in small towns
- When you've lived one place for generations, for people to act like family in terms of walking into others' houses

Enjoy. I wish I could wipe FNL from my memory and go enjoy it all over again from the start. Best series ever. Check if your local library has the DVD sets.

A few years ago I stopped watching halfway through season 3 and have spent the last week trying to binge the rest of the show; have 8 left.

Becky is terrible! The actor who played Matt was so good in the grief scenes! The actress who played Grandma was also fantastic. She reminds me so much if my grandmother and aunt in Amarillo!

I love this show so much. Every episode breaks my heart.

I graduated from HS in '94, in Long Island. I could absolutely go to the Dairy Barn when my friend Nicole was working and buy any alcohol I wanted from her. She just made me get out of the car to buy it (though I asked why and she didn't know). I was 17 and didn't have a fake ID. She just sold it to me.

Julie is so annoying, I want to like her, I try to like her but she's so bratty. I did like her and Matt, they seemed really cute together (and I like Matt) - other than that she annoys me.

I thought I'd hate Lyla when I first started watching but I actually like her. And her annoying dad. lol Buddy is a great character.

-pp who is on season 2 and binge watching as much as i can before netflix pulls the plug.

Tim Riggins forever...
Hope OP takes our advice!

OP here, just started Season 2. Different story lines from the first season, and I miss the football. It feels different. I should stick with it, right? (Oh, and I told my husband that Tim Riggins was outrageously handsome. He watched one episode, and said, "I am a heterosexual man, and I have to agree with you.")

Stick with it. I read (on here) that season 2 starts when the writers are on strike. You can tell. It comes back on track after that.

Season 2 is a bit infuriating bc of all the dropped story lines.

I guess I'll be binging this all night long. Will it suddenly disappear from Netflix at midnight?

I love Smash, one of my favorite characters. I think he's underrated on this show - I don't ever really hear anyone talk about him.

Because we are all obsessed with Tim Riggins, televisions most beautiful and complex character.

Same. Although a friend wanted to name her baby Lyla and I couldn't NOT say it without a southern twang, like Buddy. Luckily she didn't name her Lyla.

It's like everything on television, they take elements of truth and stretch it. That said, I grew up in Texas in the 80s, and we had much more freedom than kids do here. When I was a teenager, the drinking age was 18, and alcohol was not difficult for teenagers to get.

The drive down to Mexico on the show struck me, because it did seem so much like something a teenager in Texas would do that a DC teenager would never be allowed to do. My parents let me drive 100 miles to spend the weekend with my boyfriend, who was already in college. And my parents were very straight-laced! When I was in college, we drove down to Mexico to hang out and buy cheap liquor. Unfortunately, the border is no longer safe, so I wouldn't let my kids do that anymore.

I finished the series at midnight! I cried the entire last episode. I'm so glad Tyra finally re-appeared, but Landry got too little time. What's he been up to? Otherwise loved it, despite some plot holes between seasons 4 and 5.

Texas Foever!
