I am late to this party, and just started watching it. Absolutely enthralled, and stayed up until 2 am last night binging.
Question, is high school football in Texas really like that? Meaning, is the depiction accurate, where they invest big money and the team plays at the Cowboys stadium? |
|
My friend from east Tx tells me that it is. Not sure how much of an exaggeration the show takes, but apparently they really do love high school football there.
Love that show. Love love loved it so much. |

In a word, yes. First of all, the book "Friday Night Lights" was non-fiction, based upon the high school football team in Odessa, Texas.
Some examples of high school stadiums (and this is just Dallas): http://www.dallasobserver.com/news/the-five-best-high-school-football-stadiums-in-dfw-7115295 |
Another data point -- I went to a high school that was in a relatively small town, but played in the top division in Texas state football. My senior year, we did well, as we tied the team that went on to win the state championship -- but note that we didn't WIN the state championship -- and we had five players START as freshmen at Division I colleges (e.g., Oklahoma, UCLA, etc) the next year, including one player who was a pre-season All American (as a Freshman). I don't know what the stats are for the team that actually won. |
| I'm recovering from surgery and have been semi-binge watching Friday Night Lights too. Took me a few episodes to get into it, but now I'm hooked. Almost done with season 1 and glad I still have 4 to go. I'm from a big northern city, so it's culture shock to me. Good to know it's an accurate portrayal, though. |
| Yes, it is accurate. High school football is HUGE in Texas and a few states in the south. Weird for this Californian living in the northeast - but I loved the show, too! I love the marriage/relationship between the Coach and his wife. |
| So I have a question -- I have heard this show is wonderful BUT I am totally not into sports. I know nothing about sports, particularly football. Will I still enjoy it? |
+1 Read the book! |
Yes, you will! I was in the same boat. |

This is the article that the Friday Night Lights book is based on. It's a great read, OP, and will answer your questions.

| If I hate football will I like this show? |
Yes. You will like Sports Night too even if you're not into Sports. |
|
Yes, watch the show even if you don't like football.
It's about people. |

Transplant to Texas here. Yes. Especially in the smaller towns. I live in a Dallas suburb that used to be more country, and the stadium here is larger than those many small colleges. And it is only one of two high schools in the town, and my town isnt even one of thr big players in high schopl football. It has sky boxes and a really high observation tower. High school semi-championships play at the cowboys stadium. It is insanity.
I didn't watch FNL until I moved here and found it entirely believable I'm a way I wouldn't have when I lived in the north. |
| Oh, and I hate sports and loved FNL. I cried on the regular. Amazing show. |
