Crazy people can be intelligent and excellent planners. Mental illness is just not the irrational, mumbling homeless people you see wondering the D.C. streets.
Mental illness is an insidious, awful thing that is manifested in myriad ways.

Crazy comes in degrees. I am sure most people have some degree of crazy. Stop making excuses for this criminal. He wasn't too crazy to not know what he was doing was wrong. He disguised himself and possibly wore body armor to protect himself.

Not the pp. Yes, he was more likely a sociopath, which is very different than 'crazy'.

An unarmed black man in South Carolina can get killed for having a busted taillight but I got $5 says they bring this dude in without a scratch.

I'm so tired of all of this police bashing. Give it a rest.

Yes - this is a horrific and disgusting crime and this suspect deserves to spend his life in prison, if not worse. Suspects are sometimes injured by police when they are considered to be a physical threat to the police or refuse to obey a lawful order. Look at Wint (the DC mansion murder suspect) - he's a black man that was apprehended without a scratch - he did not resist arrest and followed the officers' instructions, as it should be. If an officer lacks probable cause for an arrest, that can be sorted out later. There's due process for that.

Are there some racist and bad police officers? Of course. But the majority are just good people trying to do their job in dangerous and life-threatening circumstances. I'd love to see you give it a try.

Hmmm...you know the majority of police officers? And a lot of people would dispute what you consider to be a lawful order.

As I said, if an officer lacks probable cause (i.e., the order or arrest is not lawful), there's due process to sort that out later. How hard is it to be cooperative and respectful? It seems like common sense to me that you shouldn't scream at an officer, get in his/her face, or threaten them physically or verbally. I doubt that you know the majority of police officers either. But I bet you'd be quick to call the police if you were in any danger.

And I do not think the pp bringing up the NRA is wrong. There needs to be a change in the conversation, a shift in the paradigm when it comes to gun violence in this country. ENOUGH IS FREAKING ENOUGH! Dollars to donuts this nut probably was licensed to have a gun. WE NEED TO MAKE IT NEAR TO IMPOSSIBLE TO GET GUNS!

That worked really well in DC. Get a grip.

It can't work in DC because all you have to do is cross the river and you can buy any kind of weapon you want in Virgina. And yes, I know this for a fact. My husband is a gun nut. I mean, my husband loves his assortment of guns. He also knows someone who bought a damn bazooka gun at one of those gun fairs. No background checks required. Now what does one do with a bazooka gun

Funny how almost none of this gun crime happens in Virginia, though. But we won't talk about that...carry on.

Sigh. Activism breeds hate.

What? There are activists raping women?

Not PP, but how is saying he's crazy an excuse? There is no excuse. But to perpetrate something like this, you must have issues. You just have to. Doesn't mean you are incapable of planning and executing the plan.

As someone who has worked in psychiatric hospitals for many years with many forensic cases, I would bet this guy is mentally ill. He looks around the age that most seriously mentally ill people have their first psychotic break. He probably had some crazy belief that the pastor or someone in the church or maybe black people were putting voices in his head. I doubt it was a functioning normal person who was just committing a hate crime.

Furthermore, if just one of the individuals in that church was carrying a concealed weapon, there might not have been 9 fatalities.

Sounds like a neo nazi or Kkk type; could he be an ex con who belonged to one of those racist prison gangs?

The closest urban city in Virginia that is comparable to DC is Richmond. And yes, it is happening in Richmond. Other than Richmond, Virginia has a lot or rural, suburbs, and exurbs areas.

Why should he be? The entire white race does not go around shooting up churches-this guy is an anomaaly-a crazy, gun toting, sociopathic anomaly!

Not saying he should merely making note of the contrast between the media's perception/depiction of a white guy who kills someone (sociopathic anomaly) and a non-white person who kills someone (typical black thug or common Hispanic gang-banger). When non-whites commit atrocities it's a reflection on ALL of them whereas when whites that commit atrocities its not portrayed as such.

To me, a thug is a criminal that carries himself in a threatening way - think gang members or mafia. That Colorado dude looks crazy - he has crazy eyes. Also, most serial killers are white males. But I suppose it's not PC to make any observations these days.

Thanks for the incites. He does seem to fit the profile for severe mental illness.

Good point, the deaths would have just multiplied with the cross fire.

How about instead of theorizing about this individual, that we let law enforcement do their work, identify the man, capture or kill him, then have them - law enforcement - tell us what they know. Throwing out possible theories does nothing to help.
