As I recall that lawsuit got dismissed. It read like the plaintiff was trying to get leverage since he and the school parted ways on substantive issues. That appears to have been borne out by the dismissal. |
| Still with all the past scandals at Landon, it is not a place I would want my son exposed to. The culture there seems a little too narrow minded to say the least. |
| Certainly not a Landon fan by any means whatsoever, but this seems like old, old news. |
Did you bring this up again to annouce you are not going to apply? Believe me, it has not hurt admissions at all. The incoming freshman class is one of the largest ever. |
| 11:23 here, that was my first post and I was just sharing my opinion. I see the school as a place where many boys disrespect females and are getting the message that this is ok. I am surprised that so many moms can overlook that. This makes me see a single gender school as a less ideal place for my son. I am not really interested in the school's admissions nor do I think my comment will affect it. |
My husband went to school there. Couldn't pay him to send our son. |
It's far more interesting than that. First, Landon School prevailed before a jury on the claim of wrongful termination after less than two hours of deliberations (a jury in Montgomery County Circuit Court decided that the charges were unfounded). The jury also ruled in favor of Landon’s counterclaims that Harrison had breached his contract and loyalty to the school during his employment there (Harrison had been the school’s chief finance and operations officer). The details of the subsequent settlement are confidential, but I'd guess that Landon recovered something from Harrison and maybe the lawyers. At the time of the initial filing, someone was busted for being paid to post about the suit on this very forum. http://www.gazette.net/article/20130823/NEWS/130829426/1022/former-landon-school-employee-loses-suit-against-school&template=gazette |
Maybe the Mom's have taken the itme to see what their son's are learning and visiting the school to get first hand experience vs being led by opnions based on a message board. |
| We really gave Landon the good old college try and, sadly, will be applying our DS out this year. Lots of "good intentions" with the Administration, but the bulk of the kids there do, unfortunately fit a mold that I don't think is entirely positive. I was a parent that regularly defended the school to any outside attacks, but the reality is, we can't wait to get out. |
Oh dear. Where are you looking? We are new family coming in |
My opinion was formed long before this message board was a reality. |
| 16:23 - I'm wondering what the boys are like that "fit a mold" -- are they bullies, rude, etc? What is it that you see that has caused you to leave? |

I am not sure how I stumbled on this website but I would suggest that most of the posts be ignored and that may include what I am about to write.
Both Landon and GP offer quality educations for young men. They offer small classes and interaction with the faculty that may not be possible at public schools. I would suggest that if you are considering a private school that both of these institutions should be considered. Take a tour, interview the faculty, inspect the facilities and get a feel for each of the schools and ignore the biased opinions you have read on this forum. I would opine that the parents of a boy that struggled at either school should investigate why their son could not flourish in such an ideal situation, rather than blame the school. Extrapolating the actions of a single individual to condemn a school is fool hearty. Similarly, many of the "scandals" were handled quite differently by each of the schools and the media. It has been over 10 years since my son graduated from Landon as a "lifer". The study skills and discipline my son learned in the Lower School, were valuable in high school and college. The friendships established have been enduring. If you are sending your son to either school to get into an "Ivy League" school then you are shortchanging your child and the school. My son had his choice of Princeton, Duke or UVA among others. I get the feeling that most on this forum would have chosen Princeton but my son chose UVA, invested his college fund, graduated from the McIntyre School of Business and has never questioned his decision on schools. He had many friends that attended Princeton and they actually envied his UVA experience. If you are looking for schools that turn out well rounded young men that have been exposed to the arts, sports, competition and intellectually challenged, either Landon or Prep would be excellent choices. Again, ignore posters with an agenda, evaluate each school and make your own decision |
But if you do apply, apply to just one. These schools serve different constituencies. Despite all the similarities, there are fundamental differences. |
