+100 Here's Prep's matriculation list with actual student's names: http://www.gprep.org/page.cfm?p=1142 Here's Landon's "select" matriculation list. I guess they don't like to publicize the heavy proportion of tier 4 schools their graduates attend every year: http://www.landon.net/page.cfm?p=4379 |
http://www.landon.net/uploaded/documents/news/2011-2012/Matriculation_2012.pdf Actually Landon doesn't publish their list till graduation. This has names as well. |
Comparing the lists, it looks like both schools are fairly even in terms of college matriculation -- not too shabby. Although of the two, Landon grads attend the most tier-five colleges even with a smaller class size. |
Only one of the students attending an ivy in 2012 was a lacrosse player. |
Of all the private schools in the area, Landon and Prep share the most similarities of any pairing I can think of. The clearest common denominator reading these boards is the parents (and perhaps the students) seem to have a paradoxical, dual edge inferiority complex. On one hand, they're not academically competitive with the Sidwells and St. Albans/NCSs of the world and on the other hand they're not athletically competitive with the Gonzaga/St. John's/De Matha cohort. As such, they're constantly striving to outdo one another on the margins of academics and athletics which feeds the intense rivalry. |
This is an interesting post, but it's wrong. Whereas GP and Landon are similar in many respects, they draw from a different pool of applicants. They are not alternatives to one another. It is extremely rare for a family to consider both. Gonzaga is the alternative to Georgetown Prep, not Lndon. Both schools know that in most sports --- especially in football and basketball --- they are not going to be competitive with the WCAC schools. And they don't generally worry about it. Although GP would like to beat its brother Jesuit school, Gonzaga, occasionally in football. The vitriol between GP and Landon has its roots on two separate visions of athletics. The GP people arenlt at all concerned at where they fit vs. Sidwell or STA. These aren't schools they would ever consider |
Well, if you take out the Catholic vs. non-denominational part (which isn't trivial), these schools at the high school level are indeed very similar. Both in suburban montgomery county/bethesda/n. bethesda, all boys, strong majority white upper middle class, lots of legacies, emphasize toughness/athletic prowess, gorgeous, state-of-the art campuses/facilities, very strong albeit not elite academics, same tuition, similar college matriculation, tend to excel at the same sports. What other private schools are more similar to one another than GP and Landon? |
But if you include the religious element, is not GP mostly Catholic, and Landon not? My sense also is that Landon families are more concerned with status (living in the right neighborhoods, joining the right clubs, vacationing in the right places) than are those at GP, and therein lies a world of difference. Does anyone know what their respective endowments are? |
Landon sends 9.9% of its grads to Ivies and 25.9% to "Strong Schools" (US News Top 25 Universities/Top 30 Liberal Arts Colleges) Georgetown Prep sends 6.5% of its grads to Ivies, but 28.7% to "Strong Schools," even more impressive when one considers that Georgetown, Boston College, Holy Cross probably fall outside the Top 25. St. Albans sends 21.2% of its grads to Ivies and 51.4% to Strong Schools. These numbers would all decline if one could remove recruited athletes from the data, probably a greater % drop at Landon and GP than STA. But the sports facilities at the two MD schools would make your jaw drop. Source: www.matriculationstats.org Sample Size: Landon- one year GP- three years STA- five years |
| Sample size says it all. Thanks for being considerate enough to include it. |
|
You need to look at a sample size of at least 5 year. the n size is not big enough to compare against other schools.
would be interesting to see Bullis and St. Stephens and Episcopal in the mix. |
Bullis sends 3.9% of its graduates to Ivies, and 19.5% to "Top Schools" (Top 25 National Universities, Top 15 Liberal Arts Schools) Episcopal sends 5.2% to Ivies, and 31.4% to Top Schools St. Stephens/St. Agnes data not available Source: www.matriculationstats.org Sample size: Bullis-5 years Episcopal-4 years |
So basically, you're saying Landon has Prep beat on douchebaggery? (oh -- and alumni with murder one convictions)? |
|
PP: you would be surpisesd how many of the recruited athletes actually look at both Landon and Prep.

That matriculation list is from a couple of years ago, and of course you will say, "Oh Right," but that was a weak class. I don't think Landon has sent anyone else to UNLV ever. There were a couple of other outliers at the bottom in that class. If you averaged Landon's college matriculation list out over five years you would have a more representative list. That list is also on the document linked by a previous poster. Most ninth grade applicants I have every come across consider Landon and Prep.
Landon's music program is the best in the area. There is no debate. The strings section backed Aerosmith when they Played RFK to kick off the NFL season a few years ago. Landon's art program is also exceptional and several students have won regional and national awards. The Music, Art, and Academic programs at Landon are all better than the Landon Athletic program. 33% of Landon Students are people of color. The Head of the Middle School is a woman. We should probably talk about National Merit Scholars and remember Prep has about 440-480 boys and Landon has about 320-335. I don't have access to NMS list, but Landon has had three presidential Scholars- that means the best male student in the state of Maryland and one of fifty male students nationwide- since the early 2000's. There are lots of great schools in this area and lots of great kids go to all of them. It seems Landon attracts a lot of vitriol. Ignore it. There was actually some kind of spamming outfit on this website paid to gin up comments against Landon. |
