Maybe they don't get sick or you have really good medicine in case they do.

Because they don't want to. Apparently, they don't feel cold, because if they did, they would wear the hat. Not wearing a hat doesn't cause illness. Bacteria and viruses cause illness.

When's the last time you tried to keep a hat on a baby that HATES hats? Seriously, my 18-month-old is more likely to spontaneously start speaking in Latin than she is to keep her damn hat on for more than five seconds.

Keep on judging, though. That's the holiday spirit!

That's my child! No hat lasted more than 5 seconds before being tossed into the slushy dirty snow... Definitely not going on him now!

Have you tried disciplining your child so that he will know that he needs to wear his hat?

I tried beating him for not wearing his hat, but the lady at whole foods called CPS and they advised me not to beat my child.
Seriously, not wearing a hat is not "wrong" for a child. There is no need to "discipline" a child for taking off a hat.

The consequence of my kid not wearing her hat is that her head might be cold. If it is cold, then she will learn to wear her hat. There's no need to punish my kid if the punishment is built into the choice. If it isn't, then she doesn't really need the hat, and it would be stupid of me to insist on it. I don't wear a hat if I'm not cold, why would I make my kid?

OP, how many heads do you think my baby has?

I interviewed a home day care provider in July, who let me and my 6 week old infant in carseat into her vestibule and exclaimed, "OMIGOD THIS BABY MUST BE BURNING UP WITH HEAT!"

He was dressed in thin cotton feety pajamas with long sleeves. I carried him from the air conditioned car up her front walk to her air conditioned vestibule.

I imagined all the shit I'd get from her all winter about hats and mittens and layers and immediately marked her off my list.

Ironically, now I have another home day care provider who adds two extra layers who what we dress our baby in before I pick him up. Sometimes when I pick him up, he's got on a short sleeve onesie, a long sleeve onesie, feety pajamas, a hooded jacket, a blanket, and a towel over the blanket. People are insane about cold babies.

Stop parroting information without actually understanding it. Bacteria and viruses are more likely to attack a weakened immune system, which happens when the body has to fight to stay warm. Exposure to cold increases the risk of developing upper and lower respiratory tract infections and dying from them. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17705968

OP, I'm with you.

But a weakened immune system doesn't happen from having the head exposed to 37 degrees for 2 minutes while walking to/from a store. And a weakened immune system can also happen from being overheated.

Wish it could be 37 degrees here instead of -10...

If it's 2 min for you and you don't care, just do whatever you want. It just seems strange when parents are properly dressed, and their baby isn't.

Please post the resource showing that overheating increases likelihood of catching colds/ respiratory infections, and worsens the severity of the illness.
Babies are too young to link the act of taking off clothing with the feeling of getting cold, so if you're waiting for them to learn that lesson, you might have to wait another year, at least.
