Very well stated PP. MD or VA does not have universal PS for 3 year olds (all day) and many counties mentioned have higher property taxes than DC. The fact of the matter is there are available spots at the PK3 level, just not in the area you desire. That's not the cities problem. DC CAS and AYP doesn't apply (just as the daycare you woul send your kids does not) to the preschool level so you can't make an argument that the preschool does not meet your standards. I would not date sign such petition and of you asked me on the street, I'd look at you like you were crazy. Go to a school that has a spot for your DC. There are sooo many charters that are out there that I went in during mid summer to sign up my kids while waiting for the waitlists to play out and was able to get a space on the spot. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and asking for entitlements. |

For PS3:
We are 3rd on the waitlist for Cleveland Dual Language (OOB w/ Proximity). Anyone know how far down the list they did get last year? I see from another PP that they didn't get as far as 8. 13th for Langley High numbers for Ross, Ludlow, Logan, and Brent. |
| And visit lesser known schools before writing them off immediately. |
|
Indeed. There are always PS spots available in this city, just perhaps not at your preferred schools. So the District doesn't need to subsidize your private PS.
That said, I know it is hard because you feel like you have to 'get in early' at the good places. Good luck. |
We were #4 last year and did not get a call. But last year nearly everyone accepted or waitlisted ahead of us was a sibling. Looks like it's mostly the same story this year. |
Thanks PP - I looked at the list and thought the same thing. We'll hope for some luck! |
Last year isn't really relevant with a number that low. Look at everyone above you and assume that everyone with a sibling is staying. How many people are not in that category? I would also call the school. It may help. |

Hi! My daughter was waitlisted # 16 for Takoma Ed. What do you think her chances of getting in are?
Also, is West a good Pre-K? |
There are only 4 without sibling I believe. |
I just wanted to thank whomever posted this comment. I ran through the numbers for my preferred schools with the lowest waitlist numbers and have a much better sense of my chances. It took a really long time but worth it. I am feeling a little more positive but of course I am still on a waitlist so I won't feel really good until I get a call! |
West is awesome. |
At this point, you deal with the schools one on one. If you would never go to Takoma, turn down the spot. If you would go there, sent in the intent letter now, verify residency, and wait. I think your best chance at Sepherd is to wait until late Aug/ Sept. I suspect they are a school that does not at the 3rd grade level, call every person on the wait list. It may be hard to get the PreK into Shepherd in the fall, but not so hard the 3rd grader. I would look carefully at the quality of 3rd & 4th grade teachers at Shepherd. We left a couple of years ago, because these grades were weak, don't know if there has been turnover. Good thing about Shepherd is it feeds to Deal, so you would be set for middle school, if the OOB has a right to the feeder school continues to apply. |
I live in the Takoma neighborhood, my kids are older. Neighbors in the past couple years have given up slots that they got in order to attend charters (e.g., Appletree). My impression is that there can be a pretty high amount of movement on the Takoma PreS list. This year there may be less because the bulding is newly renovated. Last fall they were still busing everyone to the swing space @ Meyer. anyway, I would not assume that all of the IB families were highly likely to attend. Maybe 50/50 for IB. good luck, I think you have a shot at entrance. |
Totally biased post on West. We are an OOB family that has been at West for 4 years. Our kids are in 1st grade. I am also the PSCO president and have been active at the school - both on activities and governance since we arrived. The early childhood program at West is top notch. It is an established program with teachers who are inspiring and lay a great foundation for achievement. My kids have had 2 of the 4 teachers and both are reading beyond a 2nd grade level. Like most east of the park schools we have an exodus that happens at K. Some of this was due to perceptions (both real and unfounded) of the education they would get in the upper grades. Others left because they were looking for more bells and whistles that West is slowly adding back (restarted with several sports leagues, geo plunge, science fair, full time art in the school). However we have found the upper grade teachers (some new and some who have been at West over a decade) to also be inspiring and rock solid in their ability to communicate the essentials at each level. New PE teacher who also coaches college women's soccer, great Spanish teacher (my kids have two sections of Spanish each week), restocked library, nice gym, upgraded computer lab. In analyzing the data we have learned that the kids who stay together - those who start at West in PS - have the highest achievement levels on the DC CAS. The kids who transfer in mid way, coming from other schools where instruction may not have been so good, are the ones who struggle more. This year they have put in place a number of supports - in class, pulls out, before school tutoring - to bring these kids to proficient. We have also done more outreach to parents to work with them to address issues proactively that might have led them to leave. We piloted the Positive Behavior Incentive System last year and did a full roll out this year which means behavior issues are at a minimum and there is a clear set of guidelines for acceptable behavior throughout the building. The PSCO has a rock solid core and we just had our best turnout ever for a family event for Family Reading Night. We launched a new website over the summer and are slowly rolling out content and use it a key communication channel along with a weekly newsletter and an active e-mail list. If you want to get a sense of the happenings you can subscribe to the Yahoo group. The link is here - www.westschool.org There are always PS/PK play dates and we are thinking to do one during enrollment month so families can make some links for over the summer. Be in touch if you want more info. All the PSCO and school leadership contact info is on the website. We will have a butterfly garden work day which is open to anyone who wants to stop by from 9-11 on March 17th. Teresa |
| We drew #5 at Lafayette for K. Any thoughts on chances getting in given historic wait list movement at the school? |
