what charter spot(s) did you receive but are turning down?

The two I know are planning on enrolling at this point and have turned in paperwork to that effect. Don't know any others who have turned it down.

Not trying to be snarky - truely curious about why you applied, if you knew it wouldn't work logistically.

How do you know that pp knew that it wouldn't work logistically when she applied? I applied to several schools that would take investigation to determine whether the commute would work. I did some preliminary checking, and some seem like a long-shot for making it work, but I couldn't do a full analysis for all 9 of the schools to which we applied. Given the amount of time that I spent at all the open houses, and the fact that in the end, my child got into absolutely none of them, without even having a low waitlist number, I don't think that I unnecesarily wasted anyone's time by deferring that part of the research.

b/c when i applied they had not been approved for the new satelite campus.
i did not know they would only have a lottery for the new campus.
i was hopeful that something - however slim my chance - might be available at the main campus.

OP, you do not have to justify your reasoning. You pay your DC taxes like all of the other applicants. You can apply to any charter that you choose for whatever reason. We all know getting accepted is a "crap shoot" so you have to throw your net far.

Would any of the several folks turning down Yu Ying PK slots mind sharing why they've decided to do so?

Decided to go to another bilingual charter. Not interested in trying to support Chinese language at home. Thing Yu Ying is great, but I'm not convinced that Chinese is going to be as important as all that, so we opted for an easier language (and one that we actually speak).

And, I'll admit, I was a little scared of the "tiger mom" thing. That just is not who I want to spend time with in PTA meetings and on the playground after school. Probably a minority of Yu Ying parents -- but I know at least two of them, and I just don't want to deal. Maybe my kid will end up at a state school

I can certainly understand all that. Let me ask, though, if you spoke Mandarin, would you have gone for Yu Ying?

Absolutely. But, I speak Spanish, French and Italian, so I'll stick with one of those for now.

NP. PP, you do come across on edge. I don't think anyone's suggesting the OP has to justify anything. The PP said she was curious. That's legitimate. Maybe she's trying to get a sense of why someone would make that choice b/c she's wondering if there are other people out there who would do the same. Maybe she thinks it will affect her odds of getting in. That seems reasonable but who know? In any case it didn't sound like an attack to me, just a harmless question.

We are giving up preschool spots at Appletree - Columbia Heights and Bridges today. Both seem like great programs, but they will be too difficult for us logistically; it makes more sense for us to just stay at the current daycare (although we are hoping for some more permanent options to come through).
