I want and need to go back to work, but I don't want them to cave. If Dems cave, we probably don't get backpay (despite the law) and the layoffs and recisions will just increase. Meanwhile, there is growing pressure on Republicans to resolve this.

There's no chance this ends before November, regardless - among other reasons, I think the White House wants a "record" duration.

News for you: layoffs and rescissions coming your way no matter what. What pressure do you think Rs are feeling? None.

DP. Trump is feeling no pressure, but the Rs in Congress are. See MTG’s comments today. You need to stop panicking. The Ds cannot give in on this.

I need to stop panicking? WTF? I cannot get another job, I have no other source of income. You people are nuts thinking everybody can sit around for months with no income.

I’m really sympathetic to loss of income, but any federal employee outside of DOD and DHS has known for almost a year that lost income was a likely possibility (history of shutdowns, DOGE, Vought etc). I took on two part time jobs to save extra in addition to cutting expenses. We are in for more hurt than this especially if Democrats cave. Better prepare now.

Most feds are two income families with children -- getting a part time job (let alone two) is wildly unrealistic until you are doing Uber Eats at the dead of night (ie trading wear & tear and fuel for below minimum wage income) or working on the weekends at some retail job, which is not going to move the needle here in any meaningful way.

If someone is truly paycheck to paycheck I don't see why they would not have looked into one of the several banks/credit unions that offer interest free shutdown loans. Here is one example from USAA: https://www.usaa.com/support/government-shutdown-program/?akredirect=true

USAA is for military.

And the fact that they haven't done so tells you something, doesn't it? Thune is on the record explicitly ruling out the nuclear option because they know that somewhere down the road, it will come back to bite them.

Is there anything stopping them from eliminating the filibuster, passing the CR, and then voting the filibuster back into place?
Not that laws are being followed anymore. They are more like suggestions.

I saw this coming a year ago, and am sad that I’ve been proven right. We made some adjustments and have cash to weather this but the decisions we made have had consequences. This is such a stupid waste. Just give the Dems what they want on the ACA, it’s popular! Pair it with something republicans want and move on.

Can you get a TSP loan if you’re furloughed? I looked at the website yesterday and it seems like you can’t.

The TSP website says you CAN get a loan. "The lapse in appropriations does not prevent you from requesting a new TSP loan."

“Requesting” being the operative word. It also says you have to be in pay status.

The shutdown does not affect your ability to get a TSP loan: https://www.tsp.gov/changes-in-your-career/entering-non-pay-status/

Nonpay status ... does not apply to employees affected by shutdown furloughs (also known as an emergency furloughs), which are caused by a lapse in appropriations.

It's a rule, not a law. The issue is that once they do that the norm is broken and when dems get a majority they will likely do the same.

That is just one example, there are other banks and credit unions that offer this as well.

The general public outside the beltway generally isn’t paying attention and they don’t feel the pain, yet. Of this drags on, Vought is going to use it as an excuse to lay off thousands of employees. When I say thousands, I mean way more than 10k. He’s also going to figure out a way to not pay back pay.

This is untrue. Americans worry about the shutdown.

Yeah I think 99.9% of Americans do not currently care that the gov is shut down. Now, when it really start to affect air travel, they will care. Can't miss those Thanksgiving trips and Christmas vacays.

Absolutely. It's proving that we do not need a federal government.

I work with a lot of former SES people and they say 11/1. No idea how accurate that is.

That seems really unlikely because its not like everyone just hops on the ACA website on the first day of open enrollment. Seems far more likely they wait until people have a chance to see their higher premiums and use that for whatever leverage it may be worth.

And anyone who has family who served. I’m not military, but use USAA because my grandfathers both served.

Foreign Service (State) is also eligible for USAA, but you have to call.

Also, if your military parent or grandparent has an account, they can open one for you as well/help you open one.

Did you file for unemployment? I have friends who have already gotten their first checks. They will return it if they get back pay.

What state?
