This. It’s not actually better than other flagships.

It is.

Prove it.

Well get admitted OOS like I did and attend. Then you’ll know.

They didn’t teach you how to craft a better argument? At least we know your opinion might be biased.

Sorry you didn’t get admitted.

lol what a weak rebuttal

It’s the kind of response that people around here think is clever.

NP here. No the response of “prove it” is what posters think make them oh so clever.

What makes a school great for one student may not for another for all types of reasons. How is a PP supposed to “prove” that Carolina (no one calls it UNC-CH) is worth it and may be better than UVA or UMD? One person says it is, another says it’s not. Poster asking for someone to prove it is the disingenuous one.

The school also doesn’t have an artificially induced low acceptance rate. It’s mandated by law since the 80s.

It’s a lazy comment, to be sure. But no, the whole “sorry you didn’t get admitted/your kid didn’t get admitted/your kid didn’t get a bid” type comments that come up regularly here as if they are good comebacks just show how socially and intellectually stunted many of the people on this forum are.

You get what you give.

The UNC booster couldn’t form an argument.

There is no argument. I’m not sure what’s wrong with you but perhaps you’re in the wrong forum if you are so argumentative. The college application process is stressful enough. Whatever it is you’re dealing with that’s making you so unpleasant I hope you get it figured out and you can relax.

Yes athletes can obtain a considerable preference. You leave out though, just how fast the athlete in question is. You can bet really fast. UNC has a national champion runner on their team. There top two guys just ran the equivalent of a nearly an 8 minute 2 mile). Being on that team is akin to being a professional. UNC is a great place to run. They access Duke Forest from the Orange County side with miles of trails. A very easy place to recruit from and one of the most desirable athletic departments in the country (not so much with Duke).

My brother from Illinois went to UNC. Multiple D1 All American. 4.0 in Economics. Phi Beta Kappa. High grades, high scores, national high school championships. Even with his credentials, he was admitted on the athletic list. Father played basketball at UNC, godparent Sullivan award winner and world record holder in the mile. Still on the athletic list, although he was likely in the top 1 percent of all students.

Umm, no.

Yeah, that's not a hook. That's just high stats.

This. A hook is something that:

Allows someone with lower stats to be admitted over someone else and/or

Gives the app preference for an early admission and/or

Allows someone with good stats to be admitted over others with good or better stats

- low income
- recruited
- first gen
- location you’re from (rural, state where the school has few to no applicants)
- famous/rich kid or parent(s)
-minority

Minority status is no longer a hook per the Supreme Court. Try to keep up.

You are 100% wrong. Minority status CAN be considered - and is - as part of a student’s lived experiences expressed thru essays. It can’t be a primary factor but can be considered holistically.

Try and keep up.

+1

Let alone the fact that some schools (Yale for one) created new positions tasked with going to schools and areas to attract applicants that fill their diversity needs.

Next Friday 1/31

UNC, UVA and UMD are all Firday 1-31 so a lot of hearts may be broken next Friday in the DMV

DD's heart is already broken from 12/15 with UVA's ED rejection.

It's hard. My son was deferred at UVA and now in the regular decision pool. He's coming a DC private - UVA clumps all DC privates into *one school* so we rejoiced at the deferral, LoL.

Where did you hear this? All DC privates are filled with a mix of in-state and out of state applicants, since the kids live in DC, VA and MD. I was told UVA looks at the kids by high school, and within the high school they separate the in-state kids into a separate pile.

Go and look at Dartmouth’s early accepted students and then come tell us it isn’t a hook or considered. It is, it is tracked, and the S. CT has said it is legal.

I am saying the runners stats are not that fast and the runner is out of state. Similar stats to another runner who is going to mediocre D1

Read upthread or push the button yourself…you will see how others don’t get that that’s what needs to be done.

I know. I push the button regularly. This was directly responding to the poster who seemed to be yearning for the old days when all the prior quotes were displayed.
