Umm, no.

Yeah, that's not a hook. That's just high stats.

This. A hook is something that:

Allows someone with lower stats to be admitted over someone else and/or

Gives the app preference for an early admission and/or

Allows someone with good stats to be admitted over others with good or better stats

- low income
- recruited
- first gen
- location you’re from (rural, state where the school has few to no applicants)
- famous/rich kid or parent(s)
-minority

Minority status is no longer a hook per the Supreme Court. Try to keep up.

You are 100% wrong. Minority status CAN be considered - and is - as part of a student’s lived experiences expressed thru essays. It can’t be a primary factor but can be considered holistically.

Try and keep up.

Go and look at Dartmouth’s early accepted students and then come tell us it isn’t a hook or considered. It is, it is tracked, and the S. CT has said it is legal.

What does Dartmouth have to do with UNC?

Are you able to click “click to show earlier quotes” or you need someone to do that an explain this to you?

I’m laughing, already posted agreeing with you, but how have I never noticed that button before?!

Awhile ago all prior quotes were shown- I liked it but yhe threads were really long then.

What’s so hard about pushing the button?

Read upthread or push the button yourself…you will see how others don’t get that that’s what needs to be done.

I know. I push the button regularly. This was directly responding to the poster who seemed to be yearning for the old days when all the prior quotes were displayed.

I’m the one you’re responding to AND the one who wishes is was the way it was before. Again, I wish for it because so many people don’t read or remember the prior posts and ask how a newer post is relevant or asks for clarification…which wouldn’t be needed if to if the prior posts were always visible. It is confusing for some when it isn’t immediately seen.

This. It’s not actually better than other flagships.

The easiest way for a state flagship to appear so much more exclusive is to dramatically restrict OOS acceptances. It's comical how folks fall for this.

I respect that UMD accepts essentially the same numbers in-state and OOS. Seems like if they wanted to implement the same restrictions as UNC and UT, then all the sudden everyone would think UMD is 10x better overnight.

Well, TBF, its national reputation's essentially that amount greater even without those restrictions. Wasn't overnight for sure, but it's been a steady ascension.

I never knew people didn't know to do this. I always wondered why there were so many comments that didn't seem to follow the thread.

UNC posted some cryptic video to their TikTok page so there’s a good chance that decisions are coming out tomorrow. Even though the website says Jan 31., it’s a late date for them as the last Friday of the month is also the 31st.

Since 2019, every single year the Early Action decision has been released before the 31st.

2019- Friday, January 25th

2020- Friday, January 24th

2021- Wednesday, January 27th

2022- Thursday, January 27th

2023- Friday, January 27th

As you can seen, it’s been either the week before, or the Friday before. This year I’m guessing it will be the this Friday Jan 24 since they did that in 2020, but since that is kinda early they may stick to their guns as Jan 31 is a Friday.

It seems pretty certain that the release will be tomorrow.

UNC, Michigan, UF, OSU & *maybe* Wisconsin on the same day!

The NC law states that the incoming freshmen class that starts in the fall must not have more than 18% of OOS students. So the acceptance rate for OOS every year will be a calculation based on how many applications the school received. This usually ends up being somewhere between 6-10% depending on the year for OOS freshmen acceptance. If Carolina goes over 18% in any one year, they will be fined unless the NC general assembly approves a waiver.

This is the same law for ALL NC public universities; however a few years ago a group of schools asked for an increase in the cap because those particular schools were experiencing a severe drop in applications (ex ECU). But most of the schools, including NC State, have the 18% freshmen cap.
