Yes athletes can obtain a considerable preference. You leave out though, just how fast the athlete in question is. You can bet really fast. UNC has a national champion runner on their team. There top two guys just ran the equivalent of a nearly an 8 minute 2 mile). Being on that team is akin to being a professional. UNC is a great place to run. They access Duke Forest from the Orange County side with miles of trails. A very easy place to recruit from and one of the most desirable athletic departments in the country (not so much with Duke).

My brother from Illinois went to UNC. Multiple D1 All American. 4.0 in Economics. Phi Beta Kappa. High grades, high scores, national high school championships.  Even with his credentials, he was admitted on the athletic list. Father played basketball at UNC, godparent Sullivan award winner and world record holder in the mile. Still on the athletic list, although he was likely in the top 1 percent of all students. [/quote]

I am saying the runners stats are not that fast and the runner is out of state. Similar stats to another runner who is going to mediocre D1 [/quote]
