UNC- Chapel Hill

Rather not discuss more specifics, but our child loves UNC and living in Chapel Hill. OOS acceptances and scholarships do happen for DMV students. Best of luck to those waiting for upcoming EA results!

Wonder if your kid is there on one of the science scholarships my kid is interviewing for...

Morehead, Robertson, oos only for chancellor’s, in-state is $10k.

This. It’s not actually better than other flagships.

It is.

Prove it.

Well get admitted OOS like I did and attend. Then you’ll know.

They didn’t teach you how to craft a better argument? At least we know your opinion might be biased.

Sorry you didn’t get admitted.

lol what a weak rebuttal

3-5 students are accepted every year from our private school, and 1-2 from the smaller slightly less rigorous private close by. Scoir from both schools indicates 1480+, top 15% GPA. From my kids’ years ‘22 and ‘24 as well as kids we know from ‘23 all but one unhooked, on average they are a small notch below the ones who get into ivies/Duke as far as course rigor, and stats to a degree but it is close: the highest green dots among the UNC accepts get into one or more T10/ivies about half the time, the lowest unc admit greens do not get into any t10ivy-types but often get into UCB, washU, Gtown, sometimes Vanderbilt: the T14-20 type schools.
The school itself, unless one gets a huge merit scholarship, is academically not on par with the T14-20 privates, and SAT evidence from preTO indicates that UVa is a more academic peer group. Nevertheless because it is a harder admit than Uva in state, the admitted unc students commonly matriculate there if they do not get into the T10 schools.

One person in about 12 years got in from our private. Lots of perfect applicants rejected over the years. So who knows.

It’s the kind of response that people around here think is clever.

Bragging rights.

Accepted into a"hard" school (low acceptence OOS rate) is prestigious.

It's the new UVA.

Don’t come for me please, but this seems very plausible to me. My in-state overachiever did not want to attend, even though it is undoubtedly a wonderful school, it felt like settling. She also wanted smaller and to have more geographical diversity. I can see how a similar student that also wants that, that might not get into an Ivy/Ivy+ could make peace with UNC oos as it is known to be “as hard to get into as an Ivy.”

UNC still considers legacy, so that can move the needle for an OOS applicant. The two DMV kids I know that were accepted recently both had a parent that attended.

Anonymous wrote:Keep in mind that 8 percent oos acceptance rate includes recruited athletes, the unhooked oos accepted rate is far lower. I don’t know any unhooked candidates who got in, the handful I know attending are either legacies or athletic recruits. Rumor is that oos legacies are treated as in state applicants with respect to stats.

Are you sure? I heard athletes were not included in the OOS percent.

I mean, it’s a low chance lottery so any information you get is going to be completely anecdotal one-offs.

I know one person who got in unhooked from NOVA. I don't know her stats, but she is very smart. NMSF and girl majoring in CS.
