Grandparents don’t want to buy car seats for kid visiting

Anonymous
I can’t get over the fact that you didn’t bring a car seat and that someone else claims their 4 yr old rides in a car seat on the plane (tell me you only have one kid without telling me you have an only 😂)

Is it just me that lugged around two ginormous car seats for years until we finally graduated to boosters??

I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and both ride in their seats on their plane. Yes, we fly (maybe 2-3x per year). Yes, it's more expensive. I do it because I'm admittedly paranoid about a seat getting lost and having to scramble once we're at the destination and worried about it getting cracked or ruined.

Seriously! They were probably thinking certain brands of cereal, maybe a pack of diapers and wipes, OP. Not freaking car seats. You are way off base!

100%.

Anytime I fly parents are flying with car seats.

Some are checked as baggage and come around the carousel as luggage.

Some are checked at the door of the plane (like personal wheel chairs.) Upon arrival the car seat is sitting outside of the door of the plane for pickup.

My parents have bought 5-6 car seats across their 3 grandkids and never batted an eye. My dad has them installed in his pickup truck. This obviously varies by parents level of education on the issue and probably socioeconomics but plenty of grandparents do more than a pack of diapers and wipes….

+1

My parents bought seats and set up a whole play room, nursery and child bedroom in their home. My mom was so excited to finally have grandkids. They still did not take our safety concerns as seriously as they should have so we didn't let them babysit when they were little. I'm happy to leave my older kids (6+) there though. The kids aren't exactly falling down the stairs at that point or getting into cupboard with poison.

My mom did a LOT -- kept a Pack & Play, a high chair, and many toys and books. I wouldn't have expected one thing more -- and that includes car seats. OP, you are in the wrong.

Sorry your parents are cheap morons.

And you were already living in a political hell ho I had no idea that apparently car seat laws were on the chopping block along with vaccines and pasteuturization. 2025 is really shaving up to be a total fever dream

I brought them on the plane at that age. We got smaller lighter ones for travel.

OP just go buy some. It’s a pain, and they are wrong, but these kinds of things happen with all grandparents. Not this thing but some kind of misunderstanding. Just fix the problem and move on.

I always rent a car so I’ve never flown with a car seat. We just rent them.

Can’t believe people are blaming OP. If her parents didn’t want to buy them, they should have said “we got everything on the list except car seats, can you bring yours?”

Even that’s pretty horrible, though. My parents bought beds, car seats, pack and plays, everything we could need because they know traveling with them is a giant PITA. Like what kind of terrible grandparent says “nah, have fun dragging three car seats along with your kids through the parking lot, onto the shuttle, and through the airport”. Absolutely horrible.

Yes. Maybe we didn’t travel as much as you did or maybe I was more paranoid. My kids are 14 and 17. I was always researching the best and safest and I would have been worried their massive car seats worries have gotten damaged. My controlling self bought and shipped car seats to stay at the grandparents houses. When they were older, I bought and shipped backless seats. I didn’t trust the grandparents to pick them out.

Now I don’t worry as much about anything. Lesson learned, OP. Buy and shop yourself.

We had the Cosco Scenera for flying back when that was a thing. We zipped it into a travel bag and checked it. It was great because we tossed diapers and wipes and bottled waters in the bag too and the airlines never cared. We didn’t want to bring our normal car seats because we wanted them already installed in our car when we returned home from the trip.

I don't have an only child and my kids flew in car seats at 4.

No OP. You should have ordered them and had them delivered to your parent's house.
