Central New York is a really depressing place. People who can leave leave.

My mom went to Hamilton and also loved it, but calls the area "the armpit of New York."

It's beautiful for reunions, but bleak during the school year.

Why does everyone always bring up how expensive Syracuse is? It's literally the same price as every other private college and University in the US.

I think they are factoring in the cost of the 2 airplanes, 3 buses, and 1 dogsled you need to get from DMV to Syracuse.

NO, they are comparing to the great value of instate schools And if not instate for your family than OOS is still cheaper. I can't fathom paying $85-91K for Syracruse! WHY? You have 4,000 options in the USA. WHY would you spend that kind of money to go there?????

Some have no trouble affording it, apparently. Why drive a BMW when a used Honda will do? Why go to Europe when you can vacation at a local lake? Why go to a Michelin star when you can get your feed on at Maccers?

It's a matter of personal preference, and someone's ability to pay. Not really the mystery you make it.

In this case you’re paying BMW money for a Chevy, paying five star restaurant prices for Applebees, paying Ritz prices for Holiday Inn.

I’m not sure that I agree with this, but why does it matter if some people to choose to pay full price for Syracuse or any other private college if they can afford it? I agree that there are wonderful public options available to most people, but not all decisions are driven by cost or ROI alone. I’m sure that these strident views are serving you well and maybe contributing to your price sensitivity.

It doesn’t matter to me at all that other people do stupid things with their money, but if they stupidly and stridently insist that it’s “worth it” then I am happy to point out that it’s not.

But just for the satisfaction of proving you wrong:

- The Bandier Music Industry program
- The Sony Music paid internship spot (only about 30 colleges have it)
- Nationally ranked student media outlets like WAER, WJPZ, UUTV (yes all colleges have those but they are not all the same, not all broadcast AAA pro baseball teams.)
- Every Newhouse program
- Every Maxwell program (undergrad too)
- Highly funded clubs and student union programs - over 300 (you get what you pay for. Syracuse even has intramural ice hockey, for example)
- Culture, school spirit, athletic programs
- It is an R1 research university. There are 146 of those out of 3,000 colleges (yes, many of those are public)
- #1 Best Public Affairs School, 2024 U.S. News & World Report.
- #1 Best Photojournalism Schools, 2023 College Factual.
- #1 Best Elementary Special Education, 2023 College Factual.
- #2 Information Technology Management, 2022 U.S. News & World Report.
- #3 Best Music Management, 2023 College Factual
- #2-5 Architecture (depending on ranker)

I personally HATE rankings. Syracuse has refused to play the ranking game, at their own peril. Started under Nancy Cantor and continues today.

I am not saying it is the #1 college in the nation. I am saying the idea it is somehow less of a value than other privates is stupid. And I have proved that here.

dp.. it is less valuable than the T10 private, but not all that different to the vast majority of private. Lots of privates have culture, school spirit, athletics... etc.

You realize that was the point I was making, right? And that I said that several times?

Well, maybe you don't.

Indeed, but we are talking about SU here, and also, those are the privates aren't worth $80K either.

So why say "SU isn't worth it", why not say "no privates are worth it" as many here do?

It's a legit opinion, shared by many, although still just an opinion.

? because this thread is about SU (?)

I consider that to be a disingenuous, and possibly dishonest answer.

Because SOME privates are worth it, duh. SU is just one that has the unhappy combination of high price and inadequate prestige/rank, thus poor bang for the buck.

I did look at SU for a specific major for DC. It would be a consideration if DC could get merit to near match in state. Otherwise, no, not worth it. Again, most colleges aren't worth $80K/year.

FFS. Not everybody pays sticker price. And those who do can afford it. There are lots of things to dislike about Syracuse, but price isn’t one of them.

dp.. even if you could afford it, why would you pay BMW prices for a Chevy (using PP's example). That's an emotional buy because you think that if you pay a lot you are getting a lot or it's "prestigious".

So much vitriol! First, I question whether any university is "worth" the current sticker prices. But that aside, we visited Syracuse at spring break and I was not prepared to like it. I was happily surprised. DD also liked the school which hits many items on her wish list (size, cold and snow, programmatic flexibility, athletics and school spirit, etc) but was not wowed by the city. Is it my top choice for DD? Probably not -- but it feels like a solid choice, where she could be involved, happy, and academically engaged, that is in-reach given her qualifications. We live in DC so will be OOS everywhere and will be hoping for some merit at private schools.

Only point - there’s at least 100-200 better private schools for 90k a year. And you know it

You proved you’re not very good at proving the unprovable.
