Another LOL. You people are funny this morning.

UVA is ranked outside of top 100. Ouch.

UVA is not known outside of VA and especially outside of US.

Hah! UVA is the top public feeder for Rhodes Scholars, next only to West Point. It’s number 8 after the Ivies and West Point, having 56 Rhodes Scholars to its name. A lot of UVA students are there now

You are late!!

….even though the same large school has never had a graduate win a Nobel Prize. It’s also just average in STEM.

Irrelevant to the Rhodes. You keep bringing up the faculty Nobel but no one cares. Have you not noticed no one responds to your posts? It isn't a great example. I suspect rather that you, your kid or a loved one didn't get in. My own DC didn't have even the record to apply. But I am proud to support a great institution in the commonwealth with my taxes.

I was referring to anyone who had graduated from UVA who went on to become a Nobel Prize winner. Rhodes scholarships are cute, but Nobel Prizes are what what bring the most attention to top schools. That’s where UVA is a complete no show.

If we’re discussing top rated world universities at the Times, why is UVA even included in his discussion?

UVA isn't really that known outside the US. The University of California system, even Illinois, Texas and Wisconsin are better known internationally.

I disagree completely. Do you have any friends or colleagues abroad? You must not travel often.

OMG. You can't be serious. The PP is correct: all of the universities listed, including Michigan, are FAR better known and thought of than... UVA?

And yet you are wrong. UVA is the top public producer in the US of Rhodes Scholars at 53 (West Point is 5). Michigan is 25th with only 27. UVA has a number of grad students at Oxford there right now. https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/universities-by-number-of-rhodes-scholars.html#:~:text=Rated%20as%20some%20of%20the,Scholars%20of%20all%20US%20universities.

It makes sense when UVA fans claim it’s one of the top universities in the south, & is a great in-state option. But when they claim it’s some sort of bigtime player worldwide they are way way way overplaying their hand.

Again, you must not have much experience abroad. You should travel. It has the potential to broaden your narrow worldview.

Research and scholarship are what make universities famous. When a school has produced zero Nobel Prize winners and aren’t particularly known for research, they are an afterthought in world-wide reputation. This is so evident in international ratings where UVA is dismally ranked.

There you are! Oh, how we've missed you and your constant, repetitive nattering about Rhodes Scholars.

UVA has at least six students at Oxford right now, including two Rhodes Scholars.

And still no Nobel Prize winners.

With 6 students currently in residence at Oxford, you’d think the Times would place UVA higher than #161 in the world. I guess the # of Rhodes Scholars don’t impress rankings that use, “performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

You are wrong. https://research.virginia.edu/phillip-sharp-2021/nobel-laureate-lecture-series-dr-phillip-sharp-visits-uva And no parent or child looks at Nobels on staff when selecting a school. Do you think Jr is going to be able to do research with Einstein? Parents, do, however, look at how the school does for Rhodes, Watsons, Marshalls, etc.

What is your link supposed to indicate? Phillip Sharp went to Union College and got his PhD at Illinois.

Try to stay on point. I’m talking about UVA students who have become Nobel Prize winners. UVA has never produced even one in its entire existence. Phillip Sharp, the professor you mentioned, went to Union College and UIUC. Berkeley, UCLA, and Michigan (among other public universities) have had multiple graduates who have won Nobel Prizes. You think they are going to brag about that or how many Rhodes Scholars attended? In the meanwhile, this is a thread about the Times World University rankings where UVA isn’t anywhere near other top public universities from this country. Here’s another shocker; no one is currently doing any research with Einstein. Then again no one ever did any kind of research from a Nobel Prize winning graduate who attended UVA. Perhaps that’s why its world rankings are so dismal.

I can't believe the UVA /Oxford booster is STILL nattering away about something no one cares about. Really pathetic.
