DP. You have NO IDEA who is posting. Now you're blaming "young kids"? Get a grip on your insecurities! |
Have you worked with Cambridge math majors? DD was going to apply to Oxford for math and we were told to apply to Cambridge by friends from England. Cambridges 4th year math, which is the equivalent of a Masters is considered the hardest in the world. |
Want to back that up with some stats? |
I disagree completely. Do you have any friends or colleagues abroad? You must not travel often. |
| No matter what you think about Oxford - encourage your kid to study abroad there - it’s the best college town in the world (Ivy grad who study abroad at Oxford undergrad PPE and did masters there (ivy, lower tier by Dcum standards, was much more challenging, but at Oxford learning process was ‘richer’ and much more engaged (tutor challenging one on one etc)). Probably learned more at Oxford despite Ivy being more challenging… |

On the ratings, these are based solely on academic factors such as research and quality of professors/academics/teaching and the global reputation in these.
So this is just a different ranking - US News World Report has prioritized very different things this year. Of course all the universities will sort out differently. |
OMG. You can't be serious. The PP is correct: all of the universities listed, including Michigan, are FAR better known and thought of than... UVA? DP |
|
Yes, quite serious. Where did you attend university?
|
| I don’t really know why people feel the need to bash other universities here. I went to Oxford and had an incredible education there. I certainly don’t feel it was inferior to that of colleagues at US Ivies. But you do you. |
| DCUM is no longer a source of information about UVa in any respect so it’s great that the SCHEV website is always available and has an avalanche of data to consider. |
I was rejected from Oxford for a graduate program. Totally not bitter I think the sense is that Oxford is a great place to be a student, but the better US universities are where it's at for research and opportunities. And any school that gets named number 1, well... There's going to be some noise |
UVA boosters have that inborn trait to bash other schools. |
DP That's too trite and simplistic. as you know. but it sure isn't my standard "booster" response. I had a kid there and try to answer the many questions on this board with honest responses and citations. |
+1 |
' And yet you are wrong. UVA is the top public producer in the US of Rhodes Scholars at 53 (West Point is 5). Michigan is 25th with only 27. UVA has a number of grad students at Oxford there right now. https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/universities-by-number-of-rhodes-scholars.html#:~:text=Rated%20as%20some%20of%20the,Scholars%20of%20all%20US%20universities. |
