My child is a play hard/work (somewhat) hard kind of person. Ok with (and likely interested in) Greek life, loves rah rah sports, and schools with spirit. Makes friends easily. Loves Cville and what they have seen of UVA.

Other schools on the list are either likelies/safeties and maybe one or two other reach schools.

OP, your kid sounds like one who will likely enjoy UVA.

There are kids who don’t love it, though, and it’s possible to say that without being a parent of a kid who didn’t get in. In fact, those knee jerk comments are pretty indicative of the obnoxious stereotype that PP’s have alluded to. UVA has embodied the “we’re not snobs, we’re just better than you” vibe for a long, long time, and though I think they’re consciously trying to undo some of that, reputations can be hard to shake off.

- UVA alum and current employee who had a meh time there, whose kids don’t even want to go there, so no beef

+ this. I am an alum with one kid there. The motto used be “THE UNIVERSITY” (saying it was the only one that matters in VA). Love the school but the “we are better than you” vibe is a real thing that was very much ingrained in school slogans for a long time. I don’t know why posters are trying to deny that.

A) no one says that. I have a kid there.
B) Maybe it was once called The University of VA because that is its name, just like The Harvard Law School. https://www.monticello.org/research-education/thomas-jefferson-encyclopedia/establishment-university-virginia/
C) You didn't go there.

It definitely was The University. I am a long time Virginian and remember it well. My sister’s friend bought a couple of the window decals and put them on her car after cutting them up to read: Virginia: The Universe. Pretty much sums it up.

It’s said everyone in Virginia universally dislikes UVA unless they attended UVA. It’s pretty much true. That being said, I have a senior who wants to go there and is applying. I fully support my kid because I know UVA is an excellent school and they will get a great education. I’ll get over it.

Oh, and the decal originally were sold as Virginia: The University.

Why don’t you believe PP went there? I did, too, and I remember lots of merch that just said “The University” from the 90s. (maybe later?) They stopped that because even they realized it was obnoxious.

THE University used to get used quite a bit.

Nice try but I absolutely went there. Lived in Hancock in the 90s where the downstairs grill made the best GD grilled cheese sandwiches ever.

A. Your reading comprehension sucks. I said “used to.” They stopped because it was obnoxious.
B. Not the same thing.
C. Again, yes, I did. Why does it bother you that this happened?

To another poster - of course my kid likes UVA - I’ve been dragging them there since they were born!

It’s not the end of the world to admit your alma mater is a bit snobby and had a once semi obnoxious decal. You can say all that and still love the school.

Well, they used to dress us for football games while the band mercilessly made fun of visiting schools and their states. That did not endear the school to lots of people.

Dear Lord! Once again this has turned into a UVA bashing vs boosting conversation! The OP probably does not care the university was like in 90s. Is UVA a good school? I would say it is. Is it the best? For some, it might be, maybe not for others. Is it a good fit for the OP’s kid? Probably. Is it a good deal for in-state kids? I think it is, if you are UMC.

My kid is a current student ar UVA and we constantly tease her with the whole “we are better than the rest” stuff. She takes it in stride.

This thread exemplifies exactly why.

That used to drive my dad nuts. He thought it was so pretentious.

I guess you're new here? It most definitely was referred to as "The University" - but only by UVA people. Their administration really tried to get the moniker to catch on, but strangely, no one else was buying it. My own brother is a 1989 alum and had that sticker on the back of his car. He has said how mortified he now is that he bought into the hype.

First year, so far so good. She is exhausted sometimes, but still finds time to go out with her new friends. She says that the “study hard - play hard” description is pretty true. She is home for “Reading Days” ans catching up on some zzzzz…
