OP, your kid sounds like one who will likely enjoy UVA.

There are kids who don’t love it, though, and it’s possible to say that without being a parent of a kid who didn’t get in. In fact, those knee jerk comments are pretty indicative of the obnoxious stereotype that PP’s have alluded to. UVA has embodied the “we’re not snobs, we’re just better than you” vibe for a long, long time, and though I think they’re consciously trying to undo some of that, reputations can be hard to shake off.

[b]+ this. I am an alum with one kid there. The motto used be “THE UNIVERSITY” (saying it was the only one that matters in VA). Love the school but the “we are better than you” vibe is a real thing that was very much ingrained in school slogans for a long time. I don’t know why posters are trying to deny that. [/quote][/b]

A) no one says that.  I have a kid there.

I guess you're new here?  It most definitely was referred to as "The University" - but only by UVA people.  Their administration really tried to get the moniker to catch on, but strangely, no one else was buying it.  My own brother is a 1989 alum and had that sticker on the back of his car.  He has said how mortified he now is that he bought into the hype.
