Mine is about to apply ED but I keep reading negative things online- competitiveness, unhappiness, etc. I can’t figure out if that is bc people online are negative or it’s actually something to be concerned about.
My child is a play hard/work (somewhat) hard kind of person. Ok with (and likely interested in) Greek life, loves rah rah sports, and schools with spirit. Makes friends easily. Loves Cville and what they have seen of UVA. Other schools on the list are either likelies/safeties and maybe one or two other reach schools. |
| What other schools are on your list? What are your likelies and safeties? |
|
Some of the other schools are:
Indiana Michigan Tulane Richmond UGA There are a few others as well. Has an acceptance at a school with rolling admissions that I think they would like. |
| Sounds more like a Penn State/Indiana/Purdue/Wisconsin/Iowa/Clemson kid. |
| I don't know if this addresses your question, but the UVA grads I know might be perfectly nice and/or capable, but any of that is overshadowed by their cockyness. I mean, it's not Harvard, or even close. I feel like grads from better schools seem far less cocky. This gives me a negative impression, YMMV. |
Why? Visited and crossed off the schools on this list other than IU. Especially disliked Penn State. Also, I am interested in whether kids are happy at UVA. |

Typical DCUM that people whose kids do NOT go to or have gone to UVA are the first to post and bash the school.
I have two at UVA and they both love it. My students only two people who transferred out and they were for mental health reasons and money (OOS). It sounds like your kid will absolutely love it as well based on your description. It is definitely a work hard/party hard atmosphere. He will have to work that much I can guarantee. Both of my kids are very different, one introverted and one not at all. They both have found their groups and enjoy all aspects of the school from social to athletic to academics. My brother attended and niece currently attends - they both love(d) it as well (OOS). |
| My students only KNOW two who transferred… sorry bad phone typing. |
| Graduation rate 95% and transfer OUT rate is 4%. Could argue many stay who are miserable and graduate, but would counter that these are smart kids who could transfer out to other go schools if hated it. https://www.collegetuitioncompare.com/edu/234076/university-of-virginia-main-campus/graduation/ |

I had two kids go to UVA. It’s been a few year but I don’t think things there have changed much.
They both like the school. I wouldn’t say they “loved” it, but both were happy with their choice. They were mainstream UVA types - social, smart and hardworking but not particularly “intellectual,” pretty and blond and from a relatively well-to-do background background (parents made mid to high six figures). Both joined sororities. Both made lifelong friends, but neither cares about the school since graduating. Both have always been liberal but as they’ve gotten older even more so. I doubt UVA would be the first choice for either to send their own kids, but both believe they got an excellent education and that the degree has served them well, no no regrets. OP’s kid sounds like they’d fit in just fine. Personally, if my in state kid wasn’t Ivy or Stanford bound and got into UVA I’d have a lot of trouble justifying more money to send them somewhere else. |
| PP here. So many typos! Didn’t proofread. Sorry. |
| PP here again. One additional thing I meant to mention is that my kids would not say that their classmates were competitive. Mine certainly weren’t. |
Why did they dislike IU and Penn State? |
| I’ve had 3 kids at uva over the past 7 years, including a current 2nd year and one who stayed and earned a masters. All very different personalities but definitely play hard/work hard, all in Greek life (involved to varying degrees) but also very involved in other activities like club sports and marching band, etc All three loved/love their time at uva but they had their ups and downs. It’s still a high pressure, competitive place to be and it’s really up to each individual kid how much they can either handle it or successfully ignore it. And it’s definitely not a rah rah sport university though enthusiasm for the basketball team is strong. |
My DC applied to this exact list of schools plus UVA, Wisconsin, Syracuse, Boston College and Wake Forest. |
