Same. I was at a party recently with a 40ish yo UVA married couple who kept going on and one about UVA and Thomas Jefferson and blah blah blah. I kept nodding out of politeness and the wife asked how I know the hosts. I said I went to college with the wife. Oops the husband works with her so they know we went to HYP. They quickly stopped bragging. 20 years out….who cares?

Sounds like a couple I met recently who went to UVA. Couldn't stop talking about UVA.

I never hear adults talking about where they went to college. It doesn't usually come up. Now that my kids are in college/applying to college it only comes up in that context.

You need to socialize with a different crowd.

+1. I've never heard ANYONE in the DCUM area brag on or be cocky about UVA. Why? because it is filled with Ivy types like the PP above who slammed the alleged UVA bragger about going to HYP. No one would set themselves up that way. All of this stuff about cockiness is made up by bashers or VA Tech rivals. Or students who know there is no point in applying (like my DC) because they don't have the stats. Or kids who apply but don't get in. It's tiring. I live in Charlottesville and have never seen this. Many hard-working UVA kids have waited on my table or served me in stores. I have never seen cockyness

Maybe you got used to it living in Charlottsville. UVA grads act like they graduated from Harvard when they graduated from UVA.

I have no connection with UVa.

UVa. is a fine school, and of course good UVa. grads are the equivalent of typical Harvard grads. They’re right and you’re a snob.

Mighty fine school infamous for being founded by infamous slave owner.

I’m pretty sure the Ivy-obsessed on this board do at want to go down this road. Plenty of slave owning going on in lots of our oldest universities.

No. That does not answer OP’s question. Not one bit.

DP: Well, OPs question was about why it gets a bad rap from some--this is why. Students may like it, but many outside the school find a reasonably sized number of their graduates cocky about their education in a way that feels unwarranted for what it is--a strong flagship university. I don't fully agree, but I would say I have seen a bit more of this cockiness as they transition from school into the "real world" from UVA grads than I do from grads we hire from equally strong or stronger schools. I think it's a bit more insular than a typical flagship because of its size and the limit to have 2/3 of students in-state--breeds a feeling of being a bigger fish than others might consider them. I honestly don't think that's too big of an issue though because most I encountered are quickly disabused of that once they enter the bigger pond.

I have zero connection to UVA but it’s unfair to call it just a “strong flagship”. It’s a school founded by Thomas Jefferson 204 years ago. Its original governing board included 3 U.S presidents (Jefferson, Madison and Monroe). Its location is also set in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also ranked #24 nationally. Just sayin…

One can get a fine education at a great price if they're in the state. It's also an attractive campus. The only downside is it's not that great for STEM but there really aren't any VA schools that are...

“Great” is a relative term. UVA is better at STEM than the large majority of US colleges. And Tech is better than almost all of them.

Exactly

So it's okay for Harvard grads to act pretentiously?

Harvard grad acting like a Harvard grad is much better than Uva grad acting like a Harvard grad.

No, being pretentious is never justified and equally cringe- worthy regardless of whether one went to Harvard, UVA or community college. But at the end of the day, who really cares? People who get all up in arms about someone being a snob need to relax and focus on other things.

Some bitter person keeps claiming that without visiting or reading up. Jim Ryan has done a lot to strengthen the engineering programs at UVA. My kid was an aerospace engineering student there is now doing doctoral work overseas. I was very impressed. She also got into GaTech (difficult for aerospace engineering), Purdue and others but picked UVA.

You might want to read this before you post again. All Ivies and many of the New England, mid-Atlantic, and southern states used slaves in one fashion or another to build and prosper. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_at_American_colleges_and_universities
