I find him and Noel Fielding so funny on Countdown.

I don’t doubt many women regret having sex with him. And he may well have done all the things he is accused of. But I withhold judgment because SA has turned into a weaponized commodity, and I don’t trust it any longer. Especially against someone who fell out of fashion.

He has been so open about his sex addiction long before that was acceptable.

If 50% of men have sexually assaulted someone, we are dumbing down the definition of sexual assault to the point it minimizes/waters down the terrible experiences of actual victims. That is not OK.

This makes no sense.

Republicans are just trying to figure out how to sour grapes away the fact that yet another of their guys is a rapist.

If this were a Democrats, the Democrats and Republicans would be in a race to see who could flay him the most brutally.

If you know KG, you know she doesn’t take $h!t from anyone.

Katherine Ryan?

Innocent until proven guilty. I'm skeptical of these claims. Years on, 5 women simultaneously claim rapes? How does that work?

LOOK AT HIS CRAZY FACE!! Goddamnitttt!!!

You think a bunch of unconnected women just woke up one day and decided to go through the trauma of coming forward with this? They're remaining anonymous, they're not seeking fame or a payout.

You sound like a bunch of idiots.

They get famous. They won’t stay anonymous. They want to see how it plays first.

The ignorance and idiocy of this statement. I would say I hope nothing like this ever happens to a woman you love but my guess is she will never exist.

This is how they want you to react.

I am a woman who has been sexually assaulted. It diminishes what happened to me when people cry wolf. When Hollywood starlets who didn’t make it sleep with famous people and then later have regrets? Cry me a river. I was sexually assaulted by a random stranger who cornered me and forced himself on me. It absolutely minimizes what I went through. It makes me feel like my experience is nothing and no one cares, even though it was much worse in reality.

Russell Brand didn’t need to corner a random stranger. That is so unplausible. He slept with a pulse who was receptive, he didn’t need unreceptive partners.

SA is about power. It's not about the ability to find a receptive partner.

Please use this as an opportunity to understand that not all victims had the same experience as you.

This. Plus one of the victims was 16 years old. That's a power imbalance right there.

Agree with this. But also I'm curious whether this PP would be part of the crowd that looks the other way when the guy is Woody Allen or Roman Polanski? Or are those situations fine because one of those underage victims married her predator and the other victim (who was 14 at the time) has "forgiven" him.

My friend posted a pic of her husband or (a new bf?) I dont know. She has a crazy life and moved around the world on a whim, with him. The pic sort of looks like he re-invented himself or got into drugs. Or it’s a new guy.

The pic had these Russell Brand crazy eyes. I’m afraid for her.

Are there really people who think Roman Polanski and Woody Allen are OK? I certainly don’t.

I am confused about lumping those two together. Polanski was convicted and admitted everything. Allen maintains his innocence. Right?

Intelligent, but nothing like as intelligent as he thinks he is, hence his subscription to all kinds of bs contrarian nonsense.

I think any time 4 separate women come forward with accusations like this, you have to take them very seriously. I believe them.

This. Withholding judgment after one accusation is prudent (and note I said "withholding judgment" not calling the accuser and liar). After four? Five?

One thing people don't seem to understand is that women do not profit from accusations like this. It is not financially beneficial to them (often the opposite, as the attention often forces them to hire people to help them) and it can often put them in harms way. It is miserable and vulnerable to tell people that something like this happened to you. I've done it and it's so hard because of the shame our society assigns to women who are raped or sexually abused.

The idea that being a rape accuser is someone a wonderful experience that many women seek out is nuts. Are there some people who may make false accusations in order to seek out sympathy or attention. Yes, though I should note anyone who does this is likely still a trauma survivor of some kind because it's not a rational choice. I suppose there are women who might make these accusations falsely to enact revenge, but because it so rarely works out for the accuser, I think this would be extremely misguided. It's likely to backfire and make people support the person you are trying to hurt, and you can ruin your own rep that way.

Most people who come forward with plausible, consistent stories of rape are doing so because they are tormented by the memory and trauma of it, worry their rapist could be hurting others, and hope that in telling their story, their rapist might face some consequences for what he did and that they might experience some closure. It takes guts to do this. The idea that five different women would say these things about the same guy and they'd all be lying? You really have to do some mental gymnastics to believe that would be the case.

I am always inclined to believe women who come forward with assault allegations, because I mostly agree with this, but, I agree with this as applies to the general population. People/women who put forth accusations against celebs are not necessarily “gen pop” - to have orbited the celebs in the first place they are likely attention and fame seeking by nature and I suspect have a higher incident of lying for gain (like another poster pointed out but with respect to the accused - there is probably a higher percentage of assaulters in the world of celebs vs gen pop bc they believe they can get away with it, are entitled, etc). Anyway, multiple women coming forward does not look good but I do try to keep an open mind.

In college the stat I heard was 1 in 4 women were victimized but it was only 1 in 8 men that were perpetrators. The dudes I have known in real life who have been accused have had multiple accusers.

Victim blaming- children can’t consent to be in a “relationship” with adults.

Any sex with a girl under 18 is rape, plain and simple; every time.

Until a girl becomes a woman at age 18, she lacks the mental capacity to consent, which is why you can’t make a contract with a minor.

Therefore it’s rape. Any person having sex with a child under 18 is a rapist who belongs in prison!

or

He’s an easy target for fake allegations because everyone remembers his drug-fueled period.

Equally plausible.

He seems so earthy crunchy goody two shoes now. And he’s always seemed scrawny and weak.

Do we really equate being earthy crunchy goody two shoes with being an anti-vaxxer?

Accusing a celebrity is harder than accusing a regular person because of the power differential. Making a public accusation of rape against a celebrity pretty much guarantees that people will come out and call you a liar, a fame-whore, etc. It raises the odds you will be doxed or harassed because celebrities have fans and sometimes fans are crazy protective of celebrities.

I actually think the chances of false accusations against celebs are lower than against some average Joe, and I also think that if someone makes false allegations against a celeb or very high profile man, they are more likely to be exposed as lying because the level of interest will be very high which means the allegations will be investigated (often by the media) and inconsistencies or evidence of manufactured allegations are more likely to be sniffed out.

Also, media orgs are very wary of false rape accusations ever since that very poorly researched Rolling Stone article about UVA, and they don't just publish some random allegation. Some fly-by-night outlets might, but any mainstream media publication is going to require some verification -- a police report, multiple women whose stories validate each others, evidence the women told people about the rapes when they occurred, etc. By the time a rape by a prominent person is being reported in a high profile publication, the allegation has already been pretty heavily vetted.
