Biden as defender of “freedom” - how do we think this will go?

OK, fine, I'll stipulate that Texas is pretty bad

also saw Abbott reference the murder of some "illegal immigrants," to which I guess we could say thanks for the heads-up, "cripple"

but apart from that, I wonder if the "normal people" referenced earlier feel like the Democrats are the ones telling people they can think what they like, do what they like (as long as not harming others and yes, I know abortion is a glaring exception), speak their mind, and protect their families? because these are all things that the "normal people" I've been around consider important freedoms - not the "freedom" to make $15 an hour mopping floors

it's hard to filter out all the stupidity on the Internet but my impression, at a very high level, is that one party spends a lot more effort than the other these days on enforcing social conformity, and it's not the Republicans - and I'm not a Republican, and never voted for one in my life - Scout's Honor! I am one of the many millions who held my nose and voted for a guy who could barely put a sentence together for the sole reason that he wasn't trying to light forest fires every single day, even if he occasionally lights some by accident

and I would hate to see the Dems F it up next summer

are you kidding? The republicans are forcing a fundamentalist Christian society on a country that is not supposed to be of any specific religion. Talk about imposing conformity.

the only issue that supports that viewpoint is abortion and that's now at the state level, not the federal

tell me, do you think more meetings these days include land acknowledgements and pronoun discussions, or the Lord's Prayer?

So, the Supreme Court isn't the federal level?

and at the federal level - in a classic totalitarian move /s - the issue has simply been handed back down to the states

It’s the STATE governments that are controlled by R partisans that are authoritarian. They are still working on making the Fed Gov authoritarian but those pesky leftists are standing in the way.

Personally I think the demise of Roe will force red states to be more moderate, because now the men there have to put their money where their mouths are and see how their wives and daughters and mistresses like it

Except that's not at all what is actually happening.

I would give it a little more time - I would only expect backlash after some number of tragedies

You keep saying this. Explain how you see this playing out.
Because, I can tell you...... "fundamentalist Christians" are not occupying seats in government, leadership at universities, positions in Big Tech, roles in mainstream media, or any other position with power.

And, while we are at it. Define "fundamentalist Christians." I think this is a term you are using as a slur when I don't think you know what the hell you are talking about.

Because, I can tell you...... "fundamentalist Christians" are not occupying seats in government
Are you sure about that?

Name them.

Comey
Alito
Kavanaugh
Roberts
Thomas
Pence
Most of the GOP in the House
Most of the GOP in the Senate
DiSantis
Abbott
the list goes on and on...

As I thought. You have no clue of the meaning of "fundamentalist Christians." Look it up. You are presenting yourself as ignorant.
Oh, and for the record..... a person who believes that abortion kills a living being isn't always Christian either. And, if they are Christian, they are not necessarily "fundamentalist" Christian.

More like the birthrate of the poor will increase and there will be less children and marriage. Will hold out to see, but this is my guess.

I don’t care what you call someone who wants to shove their superstition and mental illness down my throat. I try to distinguish between “normal” Christians who mind their own business and “insane” Christians who speak in tongues and want to use the government to force me to be barefoot and pregnant in a kitchen because Preacher JimBob said so, or deny an adult proper medical care because Men Wear Pants according to an ancient prophet that never actually saw pants in his lifetime.

The former I tolerate- the latter have taken over the GOP and ran it straight off the rails. Goldwater warned ya’ll and you didn’t listen. Those freaks can’t be reasoned with because they think God is on their side.

But if they are Christians who are imposing their religion on to others, they are, in fact, fundamentalists.

Mental illness - interesting way to describe religion

Should it be in the DSM?

It’s about time Dems reclaimed the mantle of freedom. More than anything, we want the government to provide people with freedom to transact business, live healthful lives, be educated, and be protected against the worst of corporate abuses and environmental free riding.

Republicans, by contrast, want to use the government to force viewpoint discrimination, make family planning and gender affirming care decisions for strangers against medical advice, force taxpayers to subsidize religious displays and accept intolerance on the public dime in schools, adoptions, and other services, gut our public schools, and allow gun nuts free reign to shoot our children down.

As for taxes- one party realizes you have to pay for things you buy, and it’s certainly not the GOP when a Democrat is in office.

I feel bad that all you Republicans have been conditioned to accept the agenda of a billionaire oligarchy as your own.
They don’t care if your kids drink polluted water. They don’t care if you die from an infected tooth for lack of money. They aren’t welcoming you to the club unless you’re working there. They don’t actually care about the deficit. But you all are being good and useful idiots to them and I’m sure they appreciate your loyalty while they ravage your company, pollute your children, and steal any hope you had of becoming anything other than a useful idiot.
