Were the Irish ever denied citizenship or right to own property? |
Yes of course! What exactly do you think an indentured servant is? What rights do you think were afforded to involuntarily indentured Irish servants? |
Maybe they need to blame the British. Indentured servitude largely went away after the revolution |
+1 there were English people who were also indentured servants. Try again. |
also once the white indentured servants got their freedom (if they survived), they could actually own land (which is, in part, what led to using slaves). Not so for Asian Americans. |
The right to "own" their own children |
Right? OP posted a link to Bill Maher, not exactly the most objective source, who basically cherry-picked those two proposals and presented them as if they were a done deal. Honestly, since he lost Donny Smallhands as a punching bag and was proved wrong about "the bikers" staging a coup to keep him in office, Maher has been reduced to a crank. I think reparations are absolutely a discussion we should have in this country. Whether or not reparations mean direct cash payouts or something else, or are even a good idea in the first place, should be part of that discussion |
The 14th amendment precludes any reparations based on race. If you're going to base in on being descended from enslaved peoples, good luck making that workable |
A fair point to bring up in the course of the discussion our society is apparently desperate to avoid. |
|
Can someone clarify something for me? Is the purpose of reparations to redress:
a. damages for the violation of human rights and mistreatment during slavery b. compensation for wages which should have been paid to slaves for their work c. mistreatment and discrimination after the end of slavery including the denial of economic opportunities Or is it not possible to separate this out? |
The fact that they were even proposals is insane. The only thing a discussion regarding reparations will do is to further divide. I honestly think that is the goal here. |
It doesn't preclude it at all. It would be reviewed under strict scrutiny and San Francisco would have to show they have a compelling government interest to pass slavery reparations and use special tax assessments to fund it. This could be the way to make equity a compelling government interest and would be a major boon to progressive educational and criminal justice policies. |
