Who would be dumb enough not to qualify? They aren't going to define black for fear of offending, so everyone with a braincell still living there will be black |
“ Under San Francisco’s draft recommendation, a person would have to be at least 18 years old and have identified as “Black/African American” in public documents for at least 10 years. Eligible people must also meet two of eight other criteria, though the list may change. Those criteria include being born in or migrating to San Francisco between 1940 and 1996 and living in the city for least 13 years; being displaced from the city by urban renewal between 1954 and 1973, or the descendant of someone who was; attending the city’s public schools before they were fully desegregated; or being a descendant of an enslaved person.” https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna74873 |
Put it to a national referendum and see what happens. It is a ludicrous idea. |
|
So are any of the African countries that actually enslaved their fellow Africans and sold them to Dutch or whatever slave trading companies kicking in to pay the bill? Any of the other countries who profited from slave trade paying up?

"5 mil + 95K yearly income for 200 years per family"
Calculated based on what? An assumption that every white family in America arrived here very wealthy and and had a large income for an unbroken span of 200 years? Because that's quite wrong. And why should someone whose ancestors came to America in 1912 have to pay? |
|
How is eligibility determined?
What if you're black but your grandparents came to the US from Jamaica? Why should American taxpayers pay, shouldn't Jamaican taxpayers be on the hook for their enslavement? What if you're 1/16th black? What if you're black, but your parents came from Nigeria? |
| Frankly I'm curious to see what happens when people have to actually pay for an extreme leftist proposal. I wouldn't bet on people sticking around SF if they end up paying the taxes for reparations rather than receiving the benefits. What happens in a municipal bankruptcy when vastly more people apply for reparations than predicted and the funds just aren't there? |
You have to prove you directly descended from an enslaved person, e.g. have to have records dating back. Not everyone has or will be able to come up with it even if true. And they are going to make it probably even tighter if this ever comes to paying someone. You may have to prove that you owned some property that was repossessed, or tried to get a loan but were denied.. having paperwork and proving it. It certainly will create more jobs digging out records and proving something to get a payout. |
You have to prove that you directly descended from an enslaved person on the territory of the USA. That's what I read about their original proposal. It's only going to get harder in terms of criteria the closer it will get (if it ever gets there) to any of this passing and payouts becoming a reality. It will become more specific and requiring historical records and more hoops to jump. |
IDK, that was original proposal they "approved" before more "studies and committees". It's just going to be more runaround before they come up with anything tangible, likely reducing the amount more and also increasing qualification criteria. I wouldn't worry about this as a real thing that's going to be some massive wealth transfer from one group of people to another. NObody really is going to want to pay. |
NObody should be getting any reparations for any injustices done to their ancestors from other people's ancestors. Reparations are paid to those still alive for the wrongs done to them to ruin their lives. What coulda woulda is hard to quantify. There is literally zero proof that every single black family would have been super affluent had there not been Slavery and Jim Crow. If this were true, then ALL the whites would have been rich now, but tons of them are dirt poor. It's like a wrongful death lawsuit where underwriters are trying to quantify how much someone's life is worth and extrapolating how much they would have earned had they stayed alive. Doing this exercise for a large group of unrelated people is simply moot. |
And there are also people who look lily white but had a black slave ancestor as their great great great great great great great grandma and everyone else in their family was white or non-black. This is going to be a mess. |
And why should people who weren't the ones to commit the injustices have to pay for the injustices committed by others? |
I can predict what will happen if this ludicrous idea goes through....... These records are going to be hard to come by. And, there will be people who just *know* they are descendants but cannot prove it. There will be huge uprisings because some people can't get "theirs." It will be a total mess. There will also be TONS of fraud. Just look at what happened in terms of fraud with the unemployment during Covid in CA..... https://www.kcra.com/article/analysis-edd-fraud-326-billion-and-counting/41281662 (On a side note: Julie Su served as CA Secretary of Labor at the time and she enabled the fraud by directing depts. to not check key eligibility requirements. She has now been nominated by Biden to serve as Sec. of Labor for the US govt.) |
